About The Barley Mow Inn
The Barley Mow Inn is a pub on Main St in Ashbourne where beer and cider are filled from the barrel in the cellar and brought out by the jug. It has no pumps, no music, no jukebox and no fruit machine. The 18th-century listed stone building has a tiled floor and mullioned windows. Inside are three small rooms: a parlour, an old kitchen and the main bar, with an open fire in the grate. The kitchen makes homemade curry and quiche, and sandwiches are on the list too. Dogs are welcome inside. The pub has no car park, so parking is on the road in the village, and there is no sign outside.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return for the beer brought up from the cellar in a jug or pitcher, with real ales and cider poured straight from the barrel and enjoyed beside an open fire or log burner. Several describe a pub from another era, with no pumps, no jukebox, no fruit machine and no music, and they count that as a joy. Close behind is the food: a homemade curry, an exceptional quiche, a Saturday scotch egg that sells out, and a breakfast for overnight guests that one reviewer compares favourably to a hotel's. The hosts and the locals come across as welcoming and happy to chat about the pub. The complaints are small but specific. One reviewer found sandwiches very slow to arrive with only four other customers in, and another noted that the server vanishing through a door to a basement took a little of the charm away. The missing outside sign makes the pub easy to miss, and one visitor regrets it is not open every day. One reviewer asks for simple sandwiches alongside the crisps, and one visitor's quiche was delayed when the gas ran out.

“We found this hidden gem on a bike ride & ever since we always visit on our yearly break! Lovely little 18th c pub! Real ales/cider! We usually sit outside but this bank hol we didn’t have great weather so we sat inside, the log burner was on it was really nice and cosy in there! Tom who was working is such a lovely gentleman, he’s very welcoming and knowledgeable with his ales was great to chat too he really is a top barman I hope he gets the credit he deserves”

“Called in as it opened at 6 pm on Wednesday. What a gem! A very basic (but better for that) 18th C pub. Tiled floor, mullioned windows, fire in the grate ( neccesary given our weather and the age of the stone built building) A good selection of good (real) beers served from the cellar by a jug from the barrel. Lady who served us really happy to chat about the pub and pubs generally, given the state of things today. No music! This is something rare and a joy to find ( but then again I am 69 and know what i think a good pub should be!) Long may it prosper!”

“This is such a lovely, quaint village pub. We had a homemade curry and it was absolutely delicious. There was a lovely atmosphere in the pub and the locals made us feel very welcome. The staff were friendly and helpful. We'll definitely be back!”

“First visit to the Barley Mow. What a great experience. Everything about the place from owners/staff to the food and drink are something you rarely find and would highly recommend. Difficult to put into words how the owners give you such a warm experience. Even a slight delay to the delivery of the exceptional quiche (due to the gas running out) makes it even more quaint and quirky. Being located in the beautiful village of Kirk Ireton only enhances the experience. The only downside is that it's not open every day!! 😖- check the website.”
