About The Duke William Matlock

The Duke William Matlock is a pub at 91 Church St with camp pitches on a field beside it, so campers can stay next to the bar and kitchen. The pitches come with basic facilities and a view of Riber Castle, and the walk to the centre of Matlock takes a few minutes. The kitchen serves a home-cooked steak and ale pie with mash and mushy peas, and a mutton pie is also on the menu. Gluten-free options extend to most of the puddings. Inside, the pub has a log fire, and the events calendar includes darts competitions, a quiz evening and live music. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

The negatives are sharper. One large-group lunch pre-ordered in advance arrived late, with dry, burnt lasagnes and a chicken burger the reviewer wouldn't describe. The complaint was met with a small reduction per lasagne and excuses about small ovens and one chef. A camping family was refused food on a live music night despite being told no table was needed. Campers also criticise the cramped pitches near parked cars, the shower facilities, and the lack of chemical toilet disposal. One describes chips for the children that were only just cooked.

“We booked a camp pitch at this pub. When we arrived we were presently surprised how nice the campsite field was. The facilities are basic but functional and as they don't change for children the £30 (none electric) site fee was OK. When I booked the man told me there was no need to book a table for food as Tuesdays were quiet. We went into the pub at 19:20 ( they advertise food until 8pm) and it was busy because they always have live music on a Tuesday. Food was then refused because they had had a large walk in and it was a very hot day so very hot in their kitchen. I explained we were on their campsite and had 2 hungry children and had been told there was no need to book a table when we booked our camp pitch just a couple of days before. In no uncertain terms we were told we were we were not going to get food and they really were not bothered when I questioned this was not good service when we were told there was no need to book.”

“If caravanning to get on site is very difficult you have to go steady not to scrape the caravan on the floor. There is 3 toilets and two showers only one had hot water working you have to empty your waist down the toilet there is no waste management setup had to fill water from a hose which was NOT food grade hose. They said there was entertainment on the website but there wasn't. The food was ok the chips what the children had was only just cooked nothing special but it's food. The owners were friendly enough and their bar staff. At £40 per night with electric there is a lot better sites and you are on a slant in a field but a lovely sight of Riber Castle and just outside the centre of Matlock in walking distance literally 3/4 minutes. Would I go again probably not”

“AVOID! Stayed last night 11 June. When I booked I asked for hard standing as the weather was awful. I was told it was in the car park. When I asked did that mean cars would be in and out I was told no. What an absolute shambles the evening was with cars parking only a couple of feet from me. I basically paid £30 to sit in a car park. It's classed as a camp site with a welcome to our camp site board up-so why the cars. The law is there should be six metres between vans on a site. How are they getting away with this. Also did not use any of the facilities as my husband popped into the showers and said no way you're going to use them. No elsan for the emptying of chemical toilets. Disgraceful place.”

“Nice little country pub in a good location near some trail walks, friendly staff and pet friendly”

“Do not eat here. So I shall start with a couple of positives, the landlady kindly let us use their car park whilst we explored Matlock and the beer garden setting in the sun was quite nice. Unfortunately that is where the positivity ceases. I had booked lunch for a large group at 3pm and sent a pre-order in 2 days prior, we had turned up earlier than our booking but were quite happy to sit in the garden until the food was served, unfortunately this wasn’t until some 50 minutes after our booking. Some meals were ok, the majority were beyond awful. The lasagnes looked and tasted as though they had been cooked last week, and reheated several times. So dry, so burnt and incredibly lacking in flavour, an insult to all Italians. I cannot add what the chicken burger was like for fear of being blocked from Google. The steak was ok, and I believe the cheese sandwich was passable but it’s not hard to get cheese on bread wrong. We did complain and were offered £2 off each lasagne, an abomination. The bar staff gave us all of the excuses under the sun, ovens too small, one chef on etc etc. Of course the landlady/chef was nowhere to be seen post food. On top of it all the vibes inside were ergh, no lights, no music, loads of flies.”
