About The Elephant and Peacock

The Elephant and Peacock is a gastropub in Belper on Derby Rd that brings a pub and Indian dining together under one roof. The kitchen cooks Indian cuisine, with railway lamb as a named dish and lamb chops alongside, and garlic naan comes with the curries. Rooms sit upstairs, with the restaurant and bar on the same premises, so guests can stay over and have an evening meal and breakfast served in the building. The bar pours cocktails and a selection of drinks, including Cobra beer. Bold floral wallpaper and an Indian-style wall mural decorate the interior. Dogs are welcome in the pub area.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the curries, with the railway lamb named repeatedly, one calling it the best curry in years and another finding it lovely. Close behind are the lamb chops, samosa chaat, old Delhi paneer, the mixed grill starter, indo chicken with 65 sauce and a biryani pie described as a clever twist. Soft, tasty garlic naan comes up alongside, and a few praise the drinks and cocktails. Overnight guests describe a friendly welcome, rooms that are quiet and spacious, and a good breakfast. The main criticisms concern service and range. One diner was refused outright when asking to combine elements of two menu dishes and felt the staff did not offer to check with the kitchen. Another waited long stretches without check-ins and found the menu limited and the value only decent. One diner was given a free dessert after a minor mistake, and another reported being served within fifteen minutes of ordering on a Tuesday night.

“Good food and presentation, let down by rigid, dismissive service. The premises were spotless and well-presented, and the food itself was very good. Unfortunately, the front-of-house service fell completely flat on basic hospitality. When someone in our party asked whether it might be possible to combine elements of two existing menu dishes, the request was shut down instantly with an emphatic, blunt "No, we don't do that." In a full-service restaurant charging premium prices, you expect at least the courtesy of checking with the kitchen rather than an immediate, dismissive refusal. Even fast-food chains manage basic menu modifications through a touchscreen; a sit-down dining establishment charging proper restaurant rates has no excuse for that level of inflexibility.”

“The curries were amazing. Best curry I’ve eaten out in a long time and my dad is half Indian. Really authentic and delicious. The biryani pie was a clever twist and was really tasty. Railway lamb was also lovely. Would recommend”

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An Absolutely Fantastic Stay – Highly Recommended! We stayed here on Saturday night and honestly, what a fantastic experience from start to finish! This place is an absolute gem if you’re looking for a combination of a comfortable stay, great food, friendly service and a relaxing atmosphere. The room was excellent. It was extremely spacious, spotlessly clean and very well maintained. There was plenty of storage, a TV, coffee-making facilities, excellent ventilation with two fans, and both a bath and separate shower area. Most importantly for us, it was very quiet, which meant we had a wonderfully peaceful and comfortable night’s sleep. The staff were exceptional – incredibly polite, welcoming and genuinely helpful. We were travelling with our little one, and they went above and beyond by accommodating an additional bed for him. The extra bed was surprisingly comfortable and made such a difference to our stay. It’s these little touches that really show how much a hotel cares about its guests. And then there’s the pub and food – honestly, on another level! The atmosphere is fantastic, the team are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and we loved that it’s dog-friendly too. The food was absolutely delicious, but the breakfast deserves a special mention – it was exceptionally good, fresh, tasty and served incredibly quickly. The service throughout was fantastic. What we particularly loved is that you really don’t need to look anywhere else. You can have a lovely evening meal, enjoy a drink, have a peaceful and comfortable night’s sleep, and wake up to an excellent breakfast – all in one place. For families, couples, or anyone looking for a great place to stay with fantastic food and genuinely friendly hospitality, I would highly recommend this place without hesitation. A huge thank you to the entire team for making our stay so enjoyable. We will definitely be coming back! ❤️ 5/5 – Fantastic rooms, fantastic food, fantastic staff and an all-round brilliant experience!”

“A very warm & friendly welcome from Sonny (the owner) and all of his staff. The restaurant, bar & rooms are decorated beautifully and to a very high standard, with so much attention to detail as well as being immaculately clean. The food is delicious, both evening meal and the breakfast. There isn't anything negative to say about this place and it's setting. Well done to Sonny and the lovely staff there. Thank you for a wonderful stay. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”
