Customer Review Summary

Steak is the main draw, with reviewers calling the cuts sublime and very tender, cooked as asked, including a chateaubriand and a table of four who each chose a different cut. Chips come close behind, from beef fat chips diners adored to one reviewer who says they are on another level. Others single out the Sunday roast, oysters (traditional and tempura), john dory, scallops and a crème brûlée with a great crunch. Staff are described as friendly and attentive, and the food as quick to arrive. The sharpest criticism comes from one diner who found the lunch menu extremely limited, the table small and crammed, and the steak overpriced, with sides charged extra. That reviewer was brought a glass of wine instead of the bottle, had a side forgotten, and had to point out that a booking deposit was not deducted. Another found the gravy watery. One diner asked for bangers and mash, which was not on the dinner menu, and the chef obliged.

“I was really delighted by my experience here. The service was attentive, friendly, but not interruptive. The food was excellent. I had the market fish (john dory) that came with lovely vegetables and potatoes and two oysters to start (traditional and tempura). All was very lovely. And I even had some of the sourdough, which was good as well, but not the highlight. Also a glass of white wine. It wasn't too loud and had a great date night vibe. I would come back on my next visit to York.”

“We went to the Perly Cow for valentines day. We were hoping to do the valentines set menu, but it wasn't an option for lunch (our mistake). Food: The A la carte lunch menu is extremely limited, but we ended up deciding on some oyster and a chateaubriand. The oysters were fine, nothing to complain about, but also wouldn't rock your world. The steak was very tender and beautifully done, but definitely over priced for what you get You get a random burnt onion as part of the plate... looked like a plate filler... and 3 sauces. You have to pay extra for sides. I am a big pepper sauce fan but this was basically cheap gravy with pepper. The potato chips on the side was really nice. Its the only thing I would recommend in there. Atmosphere: The restaurant is nicely decorated but way too crammed in. We were sat at a small table in a corner. Now I appreciate space is a dilemma for most restaurants but this just made it feel cluttered and crammed. The table was so small that the platter for the oysters and the steak pretty much filled the table (see photos). It just felt really didn't feel like a relaxing enjoyable experience. Service The staff is very friendly but did trip up a few times. We ordered a bottle of wine but they brought a glass of wine. I had to then wait ages for them to change the glass to a bottle. If I had known it's such a complex process I would just have paid for the extra glass of wine. The rosé also wasn't properly chilled. Then when our meal came they only added my side but forgot my husband's. Again it was a wait for his full meal to arrive. And finally you pay a deposit to book which should be redeemed against your final bill, but they conveniently forgot to do it so we had to call it out. For the price I think you can absolutely get a better experience in York. It certainly wasn't forth it for us.”
