About The Cut & Craft York

On St Sampson's Square in York, The Cut & Craft York operates as a steak house and bar, with lunch and brunch service across the week. The kitchen is built around steak, and the gluten-free menu sits alongside the main offering for diners who need it. Bookings are taken for specific dates and times, and the room takes walk-ins around those reservations.

Customer Review Summary

Most reviewers come to celebrate anniversaries and birthdays, and single out the service, with one server praised repeatedly as kind and friendly. One diner received a birthday card and a dessert with a candle, and cocktails are called a masterclass. The exception is one anniversary diner whose Chateaubriand arrived cold on a platter, returned chewy, with a manager seen as unapologetic, though complimentary drinks followed.

“OVERVIEW A very good restaurant with high-quality food in a relaxed and sophisticated setting! PLUS + The ‘Seared King Scallops’ were excellent quality, tender and almost melting in the mouth. The celery and spinach purée worked well with the tangy, buffalo-style orange sauce, creating a lovely contrast of flavours. + The menu offered a variety of seemingly high-quality choices. + Good service and welcoming staff, particularly Fernanda, whose menu recommendations were based on genuine advice rather than formality. + Dinner-time, walk-in availability (weekday). + Quick service. + The restaurant had a relaxed yet sophisticated and upscale atmosphere. MINUS - Pricy menu. NEUTRAL +/- The salmon was of good quality, and the different elements of the dish complemented each other well. However, the lobster sauce had a slight earthy marine flavour. The ravioli contained more filling than prawn or crab, with the seafood flavours barely noticeable. +/- A QR-code self-payment option at the table would be a useful addition, given the restaurant’s mainstream nature and busy setting. TABLE ORDER Starters: * SEARED KING SCALLOPS Mains: * ROASTED SALMON FILLET”

“We booked a table at 7pm on Sunday Aug 30th to celebrate our anniversary during our 3 night stay in York. We ordered the Chateaubriand which is £94 on the and doesn't come with side dishes (only a tomato). Just for context we are quite well travelled and have had Chateaubriand in may places around the world and this is not me bragging it just so we know what good and bad is in terms of this dish. When the food approached the table I knew instantly that something wasn't quite right as the manager who was holding the metal platter with the meat on , had his hand directly underneath it so it was obvious the metal platter wasn't hot. After they put it down on the the table I touched it and it was cold, we then tried a small portion of the steak and it was cold. I called them back and explained the steak was cold, the Manager wasn't very apologetic he just took it away and magically it came back within 3 minutes or so which again I found rather strange. The metal platter was warmer but not hot and the meat was warmer but very chewy and was probably the worst Chateaubriand we have ever had. I was going to call them back but my wife didn't want to cause a fuss bearing in mind it was out anniversary. One saving grace for the restaurant was our waiter whose name was Philford (I think?), he was very apologetic unlike the manager who really should have been doing that, not the waiters. They did give us a complimentary round of drinks which totalled just over £20, however when the bill came the tip that was added came to basically the same amount to the complimentary drinks! usually I would give a tip but given what had happened I told them to take the tip off. In summary poorly cooked and presented Chateaubriand and a manager that needs to try a lot harder when it comes to customer service. We paid over £160 for a meal for 2 and given we we got that is about £100 too much. We definitely wouldn't recommend Cut and Craft thanks to the kitchen staff and manager for spoiling our anniversary meal.”

“Dropped in on off chance and had the best night. Treated to a bday card and wee dessert with candle when they realised was my birthday. Food was awesome, cocktails a masterclass and staff were superb.”
