About Mannion & Co
On Blake St in York, Mannion & Co is a small hole-in-the-wall bistro serving breakfast, brunch and lunch. The menu is written on a blackboard and runs from fry-ups to sandwiches. The Full English comes with beans as an optional extra. Sausage gets its own place on the board, including a Cumberland ring sausage served with gherkins. Egg dishes include Pan Con Tomate with poached eggs, and sourdough bread comes with dishes. The kitchen sits close to the seating, so the cooking happens within view of the tables. The bistro is open daily, daytime only.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the sausage and the Full English, where the sourdough, herb-seasoned sausage, black pudding and mushroom, and a house-style beans upgrade draw praise. Close behind are the bacon rarebit with tomato chutney, Pan Con Tomate with poached eggs, Turkish Eggs, and well-balanced sandwiches alongside coffees described as faultless. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and kind, and several mention a lively, hustle and bustle room, a courtyard, and good music. Portion size is the recurring complaint. Two reviewers say a lunch that cost £16 felt like a starter, one describing a single egg, a few strips of bacon and a small serving of asparagus and watercress, the other leaving hungry and contrasting it with generous portions on an earlier visit. One of them also found the seating near the kitchen loud with clattering cutlery, though that reviewer's partner enjoyed a sandwich. One diner who ordered Cumberland ring sausage with gherkins found the pairing didn't work for them, but still called the visit very pleasant, and another suggests taking a sausage roll for the road.

“Good quality food and great staff but tiny portions. I was disappointed to pay £16 for such a small lunch which felt like a starter. Last time I went (six years ago) the portions were so generous so it’s disappointing to come away feeling hungry. It has gone from feeling like a substantial and wholesome brunch spot to them trying to achieve Michelin style small plates which is not what I am looking for. There are far more generous places to eat lunch in York. 1 won’t return and I do feel ripped off (and ravenous) unfortunately.”

“I had a Pan Con Tomate with poached eggs which was outstanding! My partner had chorizo and poached eggs which was also delicious. The menu is full of wonderful combinations. Great service Brilliant t shirts worn by the barista”

“OK......First visit to the York restaurant today, having visited the Helmsley restaurant three times previously. Firstly, I cannot emphasise enough how polite and friendly the staff were, throughout. Nothing whatsoever to moan about however......gherkins with Cumberland ring sausage? It didn't work for me but that's my fault for not reading the menu board in more detail. Would I return? Yes. Was the food good? Yes. Was the experience pleasant? Yes, very.”
