Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the front of house, describing a warm welcome, a cloakroom for coats and bags, quick service, and staff who accommodated a gluten intolerance or swapped out an egg sandwich. Steak comes up repeatedly. One diner had it cooked perfectly, another liked it but hated the peppercorn sauce, and a third called it okay next to a shepherd's pie that was not bad. Close behind are the champagne afternoon tea with its sandwiches, scone and mini crème brûlée, plus tempura prawns, Korean chicken salad, a light Mango Rum Baba, tomato soup, and a cookie and ice cream dessert. The recurring complaint is the service charge. Three reviewers call it too high, default or ever-increasing, and one was surprised by a paid bottled water offer made before they could hear "still or sparkling". One reviewer felt service was getting slower. One engagement party diner found the chicken dry, the velouté under-seasoned, the asparagus overcooked and the crème brûlée warm and unset. One suggests booking. A birthday brunch ended with a complimentary dessert with a candle.

“Stopped in for lunch during my day trip to York. Overall, a nice dining experience. Customer service was phenomenal. No complaints there. Ordered the tomato soup and steak with peppercorn sauce. Soup was hot and refreshing. Steak was good, but I hated the peppercorn sauce. The chips were good though. Coffee was nice and flavorful.”

“What an amazing place! Food is excellent but no more than the service received. We tried a specific day menu with great options and excellent value for money. Tempura prawns starter and Korean chicken salad for main. The portions are perfect and you don’t feel over full. Probably a good thing and designed that way as the Mango Rum Baba dessert was so light and refreshing. Wholly recommend. Probably best to book, too.”

“The Ivy in York is one of those places I have admired from afar, yet when a very special occasion came around, this was the place to go. From the very start, the service was excellent, helpful, courteous and friendly. The staff were immaculately turned out and nothing was too much trouble. The decor is fabulous (including the loos!) and the menu is mouthwatering. Having a gluten intolerance was not a problem and the staff were able to help with the menu choices. The food was brought quickly and it was delicious. I also had two mocktails which were fab. The crockery was beautiful and I loved the silverware. The Ivy is truly a dining experience, so it's more than 'a meal'. A lovely, very special and rare treat.”

“The services at the beginning was not bad, but it's getting slower and slower. The steak is okay but the shrepereds pie is not bad. While everything is alright, I don't think it worth a 12.5% default service fee. I don't feel like it worth the price. Even the bettys next door didn't include the service fee in default, and their service and food are far better than Ivy.”

“Visited The Ivy York for an engagement party and the service from the front‑of‑house team was genuinely excellent. Warm, attentive, and genuine. Unfortunately, the food didn’t match the standard of the service. The chicken was dry, the velouté under‑seasoned, the asparagus overcooked, and the mash was forgotten entirely. The crème brûlée arrived warm, which meant the custard had lost its set. It’s a great space with a brilliant team out front, but the kitchen execution and the ever‑increasing service charge made the experience feel like a missed opportunity. A real shame and for the ivy not up to standard. Unless it's for a party, I would not return.”
