Customer Review Summary
Sunday lunch roasts draw the most praise, with diners describing roast lamb and beef with Yorkshire pudding, greens and root vegetables, and tender beef and pork tenderloin with perfectly roasted potatoes and vegetables that were not overcooked. Close behind are the creative set dishes, including spiced pigeon breast with a poppadom crust, seared mackerel, a cauliflower and paneer filo parcel, and a tuna starter one reviewer singles out. Service is repeatedly called warm and attentive, the wine list good and affordable, and the mood relaxed without feeling too formal. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are noted on a small menu. The main reservations are practical. The room is small, and a few reviewers say booking is essential. One finds the atmosphere very understated and suggests adding more colour. Desserts also earn mentions, among them a blackberry posset with elderflower mascarpone and a dark Belgian chocolate truffle, after which one reviewer wished they could take home a tub of the black sesame ice cream.

“Fantastic Sunday lunch, such a tasty roast dinner cannot recommend enough. Dog friendly as well if you have a small well behaved pooch. Super friendly staff and very affordable good quality wine list. Well worth a visit when visiting York.”

“Having missed our opportunity for a Saturday evening meal thru not booking the chance of a lunch was too good to miss. And so glad we didn't miss the restaurant. Service would have to be exemplary, attentive Maitre De and wait staff. Then to crown the experience we ordered both lamb and beef roast. What a surprise for the taste buds. Root vege, yorkshire pudding, greens and meat to die for. Possibly the best meal in UK to date. The place might be small, and bookings essential but it is so worth it! As visitors from New Zealand the experience was amazing.”

“We had a lovely dinner for two. Recommend booking in advance since it's a small restaurant. Every dish was flavorful and delicious. Definitely recommend the tuna appetizer.”

“This was one of our favorite meals from our two week time in the UK. The food was absolutely delicious and the plating was beautiful. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was also wonderful - warm and attentive. Definitely a highlight of our trip!”

“Over the past couple of years we have visited No8 a handful of times and we have never had a bad meal. The food, presentation and service are all superb. We have been let down by other restaurants either at Christmas, NY, Valentine's etc, however, we visited for Valentines and service and quality was perfect as always.”
