Quick info
About The Lych Gate Tavern
The Lych Gate Tavern is a half-timbered pub in Wolverhampton, at 44 Queen Square, beside a church and its lych gate. Black Country Ales owns the pub, and most of the beer on offer comes from that brewer. Nine or ten cask ale pumps carry a selection that changes regularly, with a cider alongside. For food, the pub sells cobs, including a cheese and onion filling. The bar is a single room down a flight of stairs, set among the old beams and walls of the building. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return mostly for the real ales, with a rotating choice of around nine or ten casks plus a cider. Drinkers single out BFG, described as a light ale suited to a warm evening, along with Attic Brewing Midnight, Magpie Brewing Ten For Bliss and a first pint from Nuttycombe. Close behind are the filled cobs, with cheese and onion ones called awesome, and several praise the Black Country Ales standards behind them. The old beams, half timbered walls and lower level beer garden come up repeatedly, as does the friendly staff and the welcome for dogs. Fair prices are noted by a couple of reviewers. The one practical complaint is access: the beer garden involves fairly steep stairs, though a lift serves the upstairs area. One visitor said it was worth travelling six hours for, and another described it as packed almost solid before 10pm.

“Always very well kept real ales and always a good choice of them. Excellent service…like it should be and a friendly clientele whenever I have visited. Nice lower level beer garden which gives the best view of the ancient half timbered part of the building”

“One of wolverhamptons top pubs, quite old looking and inside its very cosy, good real ales and a fair price and the staff are very pleasant. The cheese and onion batches are awesome and only £3. The pub is situated in the city centre so easy to find.”

“One of my most favourite pubs, we always make sure we visit whenever we are back and having a reunion in Wolves. Amazing beers, lovely atmosphere and great staff. Worth travelling six hours to visit”

“Gorgeous Black Country Ales with both indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor seating is of decent size and allows you to see the history of the building - as well as inside with its old beams and walls. There’s a function room upstairs. Excellent choice of beers and ales which varies regularly. Like all Black Country Ales, you’ve got the cobs! Dog friendly - a great boozer than could easily be missed so make sure you look out for it as it’s a hidden gem!”

“Another good old fashioned pub. Happy, friendly staff and a decent drink on top. If you want to go to the beer garden beware as involves some fairly steep stairs. There is a lift available to the upstairs area”
