Customer Review Summary
Roast dinners draw the most praise at this country pub, especially the Sunday roast, where reviewers describe a nut roast as the nicest veggie roast they have had, with extra roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese and generous portions. Close behind are the starters and mains diners name: smoked sea trout, farmhouse pate, fried pickles with blue cheese sauce, mackerel, a beef short rib with creamy mash, a shared cote de boeuf and a grilled chicken main. A sticky toffee pudding is singled out as a dessert highlight. Service is repeatedly called friendly and attentive, including a kitchen that made an extra celebratory pudding for an anniversary and staff who accommodated a gluten free request. The pub also hosted a wedding that one couple said they could not fault. The caveats are specific. One diner received two thin slices of dry roast beef and reheated tasting potatoes with little gravy, and a large group found the hake slightly overcooked and the first round of drinks slow. One diner who praised the roast says the pub is extremely popular and advises booking in advance.

“We stumbled across this place while visiting Oakley Court (filming location of The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and boy are we glad we did. The service was excellent and the food was absolutely brilliant. We really enjoyed the smoked sea trout and the farmhouse pate. Oh, and definitely try the fried pickles with blue cheese sauce!”

“Had a beautiful festive dinner at the Greene oak with my family, the staff were so amazing, lovely and attentive even though it was busy. The food was stunning. I had the mackerel starter which was incredible, and the beef short rib which was absolutely out of this world, the mash was smooth, creamy and rich and the beef was so tender it melted off the bone and onto the velvety mash. The potatoes are always unbeatable, perfectly crisp on the outside and tender on the inside, flavoured aromatically with herbs and seasonings. Thank you for a wonderful meal and experience! *edit 2nd July 2026* I have been back a few times since and Greene oak just keeps getting better and better. The chicken wings were unreal, and the skate fish which was a special this week was unbelievable — the fish melts in your mouth and the flavour was incredible. I’ve never had fish as good as this. thank you to all the staff for making the experience spectacular!! Ieuan especially has made every time I’ve been there in the evening an amazing time, has been so professional but also so friendly — thank you!”

“I came here because this place has such excellent reviews, but the quality was very disappointing. I was served two very thin slices of roast beef that seemed reheated rather than freshly carved. The meat lacked freshness and was dry inside. The roast potatoes also tasted like they had been reheated rather than freshly roasted, and there was very little gravy, even though it is an essential part of a proper Sunday Roast. Considering the excellent reviews, I expected much better quality. The food was simply not worth the price. Based on my experience, I would rate it 2 out of 5 stars.”

“We attended a company event at this charming pub, which had a lovely, traditional British atmosphere and a great selection of beers. As a large group, the first round of drinks took a little time to arrive, but the staff handled everything well overall. We started with some hors d’oeuvres while enjoying our beers, which were very nice and a great way to begin the evening. Dinner was a bit of a mixed experience. The starter, chopped beef, was tasty and well seasoned. However, the main course—hake—was slightly overcooked and lacked flavour. That said, it’s understandable given the challenge of serving a large group all at once. Dessert was a highlight: the sticky toffee pudding was tender, rich, and full of flavour. Overall, I had a great time. The atmosphere, the company, and the well-pulled ales made for an enjoyable evening despite a few minor inconsistencies in the food.”
