About The King & Castle

Across from Windsor Castle on Thames St, The King & Castle is a real ale pub in Windsor spread over three floors, each with a different feel. Upstairs window booths and bay seating look out toward the castle, and the front windows share the view. The building is a former chemist and has been a pub since the 1960s. Fish and chips and Steak & Ale pudding appear among the dishes, and an afternoon specials menu runs alongside the main offering. Customers order at the bar or from the table through the Wetherspoons app, and food is brought to the table. The pub takes walk-ins, and weekends tend to get busy.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the view of Windsor Castle from the upstairs window booths and bay seating, which several single out as what makes this Wetherspoons special. Close behind is the value: cheap drinks, reduced-price afternoon specials, and large portions, with one diner calling the fish and chips incredible and another praising a Steak & Ale pudding that filled them up. Drinkers mention a local Windsor and Eton ale and a good cider. Service is described as quick and efficient, with ordering through the app or at the bar and food arriving piping hot, and staff are called friendly and helpful. One reviewer enjoyed an early breakfast and a welcoming reception. The one caution is that it gets busy at weekends given the location, while others found plenty of open tables on a quiet afternoon. Several reviewers advise trying for a window booth upstairs, and one noted a server checking whether the meal was all right.

“Classic witherspoons. Cheap drinks and cheap and cheerful food. Professional and friendly service. But this spoons comes with a very impressive location and wonderful views out its front windows which makes it very special. It’s located in an old chemist and has been a pub since the 1960s. Great use of this building. Try your best to bet a booth by the windows upstairs for a superb view of the castle looming over the town.”

“Good food, drinks, and atmosphere. Most places in England you go to the bar to place your order, give them your table number and staff brings you your food. You get your drinks at the bar too. This place is close to Windsor Castle so it was a nice and convenient place to some good food and have a good cider before taking a tour of Windsor Castle.”
