Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the roast dinner, describing it as hearty and piping hot, with crisp roasties, rich gravy and giant Yorkshires, and a couple who are fussy eaters found nothing to complain about. The canal setting is close behind, praised for its relaxed feel, large garden and a place to stop on a canal walk. Starters such as halloumi fries and flatbread with hummus also get a mention, and one reviewer enjoyed the burger. Service splits the reviews. Several single out a welcoming, friendly waitress, while others describe forgotten drinks, plates left uncleared before mains and greens arriving when half the roast was gone. The sharpest complaints concern the kitchen: a chicken pie described as mostly pastry, a very small portion of roast lamb that needed topping up, and a ham and leek pie that arrived incinerated. Reviewers are also divided on the DJ who plays on Saturdays. In that last case, the manager refunded the meal and apologised.

“The Dinner: The roast dinner was satisfying and properly hearty. Everything arrived piping hot—tender meat, crisp roasties, rich gravy, and giant Yorkshires with all the trimmings. It felt like a proper home-style feast without having to do the washing up. The Setting: Sitting by the Grand Union Canal as dusk settled gave the place a relaxed, cozy feel. Inside was warm, rustic, and welcoming, making it easy to settle in for a couple of drinks after finishing our plates. The Service: The staff were great—laid-back, attentive, and not rushing us out the door, which let us really take our time and enjoy the evening. Thanks Scarlet for being a lovely host.”

“Great food, fabulous atmosphere and amazing service. We came for the music bingo (which was free how good is that!) and a bite to eat. We loved everything about this cozy pub and would definitely recommend.”

“Mixed experience visiting for the first time in over 15 years. Nobody manning the outdoor seating area - more than half the tables empty so wasn’t busy at all. DJ playing soul and jazz music on Saturdays was a nice touch. Sat ourselves down. Couple sat next to us massively complained about food standards but we chose to give the place the benefit of the doubt, scanned QR code on table - table number not listed (assuming the sun bleached out the ink of the handwritten table number under the glass). Ordered starters (halloumi fries - very nice although one was questionably very very thin), also ordered mains, drinks all at same time, and selected option for starters to be served with mains… 5 mins after ordering we get starters first, 10 mins later drinks eventually come out and I ask waitress for an ash tray… she casually looks and says yeah there’s on on the bench (insinuating for me to to get it myself), and walks off… Wow ok. Fine - went and got it myself. Mains come out over 30 mins after ordering, my ham and leak pie completely incinerated and inedible. My brother enjoyed the burger which he said was amazing. Manager kindly refunded me for my meal and apologised. I witnessed one waitress walk over, look at a messy table that needed cleaning, then turn round and decide to start collecting glasses and tissues from another table instead. Nobody to ask if our food was ok. I get these things happen but when you compare it to the likes of the Old Orchard or Browns, there is no comparison because the service was more or less non-existent at Coy Carp today. I get it, it’s hot, you’re waiting on people, not ideal, but based on my experience I would be gob smacked to see the place still open in a years time if this is how the business operates on a daily basis (I’m actually baffled that there are so many 5 star reviews singing this places praises. It needs a massive overhaul with its service and kitchen standards. Of course the setting by the canal is lovely, and most staff are somewhat friendly, but there seems to be no standard of care or actual management. Such a shame for a pub that once outshone most others.”

“Food was nice, had beef and lamb roast. Service wasn’t that great as they forgot about us, later on they forgot to bring all the food to the table, so we received our greens and veggies when half of the roast was gone. Hopefully better next time.”

“Really great setting alongside the canal and a relaxed atmosphere outside with the water trickling by. Beautiful old building with authentic fixtures, very large space inside and the garden is huge with plenty of tables. Didn't have any food. The staff were really helpful when we had an issue with beers, first of the day probably been in the pipes overnight so tasted vinergery”
