About Ewings

Ewings, a cafe and tea room on 1A Strand in Torquay, puts a side of chips on the table that comes bottomless, so refills keep arriving for as long as you are eating. Breakfast runs through the morning in a smaller and a fuller version, and the rest of the menu moves through burgers, including a JD burger topped with egg, bacon, onion rings and ranch sauce, plus homemade plates such as chilli con carne. Sandwiches, baguettes, paninis and toasties cover a lighter lunch, and coffee, tea and scones round things out. Waitresses take orders and bring food out to the tables, and the cafe works on a walk-in basis rather than bookings. A step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs, high chairs make room for families with young children, and tables outside give the option of eating in the open air. Dogs are welcome alongside the regulars who come in. It opens daily.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the full breakfast, with one praising mushrooms that tasted freshly picked and sausages that won over a fussy eater. Burgers come close behind, including a chicken burger and one with egg, bacon, onion rings and ranch sauce, along with bottomless chips and onion fries. Tea and scones, a homemade chilli con carne, panini and toasties also earn praise, and the coffee, friendly owner and welcoming staff come up repeatedly. The main complaints concern the food details. One reviewer found a salmon baguette with hardly any salmon, lots of raw onion and a dry, unbuttered baguette, while another called the chips tasteless and frozen-seeming. One diner had an order arrive wrong, with no cutlery or serviettes for a side salad, and another disliked the waitress shouting from the kitchen to tables. One visitor out of season found it quiet and a bit empty. Several reviewers describe the interior as comfy and relaxing, and one notes how many regulars seemed to be there.

“Got food order wrong. Food was put on the table but not given serviettes or cutlery. We were expected to eat a side salad with our fingers?”

“Sweet little place where we grabbed a light lunch and some cold drinks. Lovely atmosphere and good, tasty panini and toasties although disappointed with the chips, tasteless and felt like they were frozen cheap chips (hence not 5*) Service was great though and lovely attentive staff.”

“You always get a friendly greeting from the owner. Great coffee and sandwiches, and a relaxing and comfy interior. Reasonable prices”

“Came here on a Friday evening over Easter as a large group. We were the only group in there! The waitress was friendly, the food choice was great. I had a steak that was nice and my husband had a burger (JD) which he hasn’t stopped raving about. They offer unlimited refills on chips but only needed one serving as our meal came with onion fries that were delicious. Would recommend this place.”
  • Claudia Belchior
“This is a great place where you can enjoy a bit of everything—from burgers to a lovely breakfast and homemade meals. I especially enjoyed the tea and scones, which were delicious. Everything was fresh, homemade, and clearly prepared with care. The staff were very welcoming, making it a really pleasant experience overall. I’d definitely recommend this place if you’re visiting Torquay!”
