About Platters

Breakfast and brunch drive the kitchen at Platters, a café on Union Street in Torquay that opens Tuesday to Saturday during the daytime and closes on both Sundays and Mondays, so it suits mid-week morning plans rather than weekend ones. Orders for food and coffee go in at the counter, and plates are brought over to the table once they are cooked to order. Portions come large, and a vegetarian breakfast sits on the menu alongside the rest. Tables work on a walk-in basis with no reservations taken, and a wait can build when a steady stream of customers arrives. The same counter handles ring and collect and takeaway orders for anyone eating off site. High chairs are on hand for families with young children. Inside, the decor is kept simple and clean, making the most of the space available.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is what reviewers return for, and the vegetarian breakfast is named most often, with one describing it as massive enough to take hours to sleep off and another saying it did not disappoint. Close behind is the cooked-to-order cooking, with several praising fresh ingredients, food that arrives hot, and large portions. Staff are repeatedly called welcoming and wonderful, and one reviewer notes a constant stream of eat-in and takeaway customers. Coffee and drinks are ordered at the counter. The main complaints concern busyness: one reviewer waited for a table at 10 am and again after ordering. One reviewer also finds the outside signage out of step with the inside. A dissenting reviewer called the brunch flavourless apart from the oil it was fried in, found the staff blunt, and felt the cost was too high. That reviewer later reports diarrhoea and vomiting an hour after eating, while another reviewer mentions a 5-star hygiene rating. Reviewers who liked it close on a promise to come back next time they are in Torquay.

“Ordered a brunch expecting to pay £5-7, £10!!!! Food tasted of nothing except the oil it was fried in, staff aren't welcoming and extremely blunt. There's 2 cafes in a 2 minute walking radius I would highly recommend you go to instead of Platters Cafe. Don't come here unless you're starving, have money you don't mind wasting and are unable to walk to a better cafe. Only saving grace was short waiting time, but I'd rather wait an extra 5 minutes for a half decent meal. Edit: 1 hour after getting home, diarrhea followed by vomiting. Repeated hot and cold flushes, love paying £10 for food poisoning.”

“Nicely cooked and super fresh ingredients. Alongside The New Harbour Café in Shetland this is probably on my top breakfasts I’ve ever had in the UK. Proper food, cooked rightly no fuss.”

“Had a breakfast and coffee. Staff are wonderful and very welcoming ans lovely atmosphere, food is cooked to order and came out perfectly cooked and hot and at a great price. I shall definitely return again next time I visit Torquay. Highly recommend to anyone.”

“Massive veggie breakfast that took me hours to sleep off. I get the name now. Will return”

“Lovely little cafe, Lisa and Mark are wonderful and always make you feel welcome. Food is great and cooked to order. Lovely cosy atmosphere inside. I would say the signage outside lets them down as doesn't match the cost vibes that the inside has.”
