About The Kentish Rifleman
On Roughway Ln in Tonbridge, The Kentish Rifleman is a family-run pub in the Kentish countryside, with low oak-beamed ceilings and open fireplaces inside the older part of the building. A modern extension adds a garden room or conservatory next to the indoor restaurant area, giving the pub more than one place to sit down to a meal. The kitchen prepares its food fresh and from scratch, and the menu includes a Sunday roast and a ploughman's lunch. The drinks list is locally sourced. Dogs are welcome in the pub, so visitors can bring a pet along.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the Sunday roast, with one calling it the best pub roast they have had, and another group of friends describing fantastic roasts at a Sunday lunch. Close behind are the proper pie with truffle and huge chunks of pork, the ploughman's lunch, the roasted lamb rump, a juicy cheeseburger with crispy fries, and a cinnamon ice cream one diner found divine. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, even on a busy Mother's Day, and a group of eleven with a dog and dietary requirements had their preordered meals served promptly. The garden room, old wooden pub feel and dog-friendly setting come up often. The main complaints are small. Parking is awkward on dirt roads and grass verges, and one detailed review found the smoked salmon lacking any smoke, the bread stale and burnt in places, and the sticky toffee pudding short on sauce. Several suggest booking, and one reviewer's father-in-law, returning to a pub where he once celebrated his 21st birthday, gave his pie a 12 out of 10.

“Love this place so much. Get the ploughmans lunch it made me love it even though as a kid I hated it. Great old wooden pub vibe. Very dog friendly. Good beer. Lovely staff. No criticisms at all except maybe parking is awkard on dirt roads and grass verges.”

“Lovely pub, for just a drink too but the food and restaurant/eating options areas are gr8. Dog friendly area. Non smoking area. Conservatory or indoor restaurant. The food was really good. 3 of us ate. Father in law who is coming 92 wanted to re visit again,as had his 21st birthday there. He had the 'Proper Pie', with truffle, which had huge chunks of pork. He gave it a solid 12/10, (as we rate the food on our lunch adventures, He usually gives an 8/10 !!) We also had the chilli beef salad which was really lovely and steak chiabata which was also enjoyed too. Service really good. Food very good plus nice & fresh. Jolly marvellous. Oh & the toilets were fantastic. Really well presented and super clean.”

“So after rediscovering this pub last month I came back with a group of 5 friends for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed! Fantastic Sunday roasts, lovely atmosphere & super attentive and friendly service. Another 5 impressed and potential regular customers! Hard to fault apart from a bit of difficulty parking due to its popularity but we got there in the end! Will return soon”

“Helen and I enjoyed a spontaneous midday lunch at the Kentish Riflemen and wasn’t disappointed. The food was lovely, the service was great, and the views were wonderful. It was a really pleasant experience, and I would definitely return.”
