About The Swan on the Green
The Swan on the Green is a community-run pub on The Green in Maidstone, facing a village green in Kent. The building dates back to 1526 and turns 500 this year. The kitchen works through a menu of 27 dishes that mixes traditional and modern cooking, with Baked Camembert among the starters and a Sunday roast of roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and vegetables. At the bar, locally supplied real ales, ciders and craft beer sit alongside Harveys Sussex Bitter on tap, and some of the beers are brewed on site. Two open fires burn inside the pub, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is the most frequent draw, with reviewers describing roast beef and Yorkshire pudding alongside a vegetarian option, and praising the tender slices of beef. Close behind are the starters and platters, including baked Camembert, chilli cauliflower bites, a seafood platter and charcuterie, while the ham and chicken pie and sausages and mash are called generous. Calves liver and onions with bacon is described as wholesome winter food. Reviewers also single out the friendly staff, the good selection of beers, some brewed on site, and the two open fires on wet cold days, with dogs welcome. The outside seating on the village green earns its own praise. The one serious complaint is a pie and pint night where the party waited 30 minutes for drinks and a menu, was offered only two vegetarian pies, and left without anyone taking an order. That reviewer, who had invested in the pub, called the experience amateurish and said more staff were needed. Another reviewer who lunched there after the refurbishment finished on creme brulee and Black Forest roulade.

“Food was delicious, we had a Sunday roast (beef and veggie), baked Camembert and chilli cauliflower bites. Really friendly staff, great service and warm, cosy atmosphere.”

“Update October 4th 2026 Refurbishment has come on a pace and the brand new kitchen is up and running. Delicious food for Sunday Lunch today. Olives & Padron Peppers while we waited for my Roast Beef, Yorkshire Pudding and Vegetables. Mrs had Mussels and some lovely Fries. She had Creme Brulee for Dessert, I had Black Forest Roulade. Drinks were On the Nod Bacchus and Harvey's Best. Excellent Service from Kim and the Team. Had lunch here again at end of March. Same consitent Quality and Standards and the icing on the cake was to find Harveys Sussex Bitter on sale. A lovely, leisurely Lunch. First Sunday Lunch of 2026 at The Swan. Newly redecorated so much brighter. A well sized bowl of Olives to start with. Excellent Roast Beef (the two large slices were tender, succulent and about 4mm thick) and Yorkshire Pudding followed by Rhubarb and Apple Crumble with Custard. Good friendly efficient Service as is always the case. Highly recommended. Great Calves Liver and Onions with greens and a bonus serving of Bacon on top. Wholesome winter warmer food.”

“Booked for pie and pint night for 3 of us last week. We arrived in time for 7pm to be met by a man who I am not sure if he worked there or was just a local trying to help out. We were sat in the restaurant. Got fed up waiting for someone to come over for drinks and menu’s that we went to the bar ourselves in the end. Finally someone came with a menu board after 30 minutes with just items available. Two vegetarian pies. Not a great choice. Then no one came I’ve to take our order so as we were hungry, we decided to leave and go somewhere else, where we had a most gracious greeting, the full menu available and incredible service. I love the Swan on the Green so much that I invested a small amount in it. We were excited to see all the improvements that have been made but it was just a very amateurish experience. You don’t run out of pies by 7pm at a pie and a pie night and if you are going to be busy put more staff on. Very disappointing.”

“We had a lovely Sunday roast here yesterday. A lovely spot with friendly staff and atmosphere. It is a community run pub and as such has a good selection of beers, some of which are brewed on site.”
