About The Moody Mare
Family owned for 22 years, The Moody Mare is a gastropub in Maidstone at 501 Seven Mile Ln, on the edge of Mereworth woods. The pub has giant heated tipis and a large marquee attached to the building, plus a front and back garden. In the kitchen, homemade pies and dry aged steaks sit alongside fish, meat and vegetables that are locally sourced. The Sunday roast comes with a choice of turkey, gammon or beef, served with Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. Dogs are welcome, and so are walkers and cyclists. The venue also caters for weddings and large functions.

Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is the most common reason reviewers mention, and opinion on it splits sharply. Praise centres on a roast made from scratch, followed by a lemon and lime posset with warm shortbread. Others found the roast disappointing: beef that came out well done, grey and tough, boiled sprouts and carrots, and dry meat at a table of ten, with gravy missing and a non-vegan Yorkshire pudding served with a vegan meal. Service draws mixed comments, with slow food and several waitresses visiting one table on one side, and friendly, attentive staff on the other. Mussels, a burger with a huge portion of chips and interesting beers get a mention too. The marquee and Tipi area are called beautiful, though one reviewer found the flooring squeaky. Several describe anniversary visits where the staff added a chocolate-decorated anniversary dessert, and one wedding family recalls the manager laying out a candlelit table for a private last dance.

“My husband and I ate here last week for our anniversary, the food and service was brilliant as they also did a nice little touch at the end with an anniversary dessert, highly recommend and will definitely come back!”

“We had a little hiccup on the night of my daughters wedding which was no fault of the venues so they never got their private last dance but alan went above and beyond to rectify this. We visited again tonight where alan had laid out a lovely table with candles and flowers oraganised their wedding playlist and they got to have their private last dance. I ate in the resturant with my other daughter and the sevice food and atmosphere was 10 out of 10. Lovey pub. We will definatly be going back to visit again soon 😁”

“WOW! Food, service and atmosphere 2nd to none… we’ve been meaning to visit this restaurant for sometime and on entering was pleasantly rewarded by the welcome and great atmosphere. Being a Sunday decided to go for the roast, the traditional English dinner. Had a little longer wait, but what do you expect when the food was made from scratch and not pre-packed and bland. Totally blown away with the dinner. You could taste the heart and sole in the chefs cooking. I finished off with the lemon & lime posit. This was beautiful created and not too sweet. You could taste the citrus, without being too sour. The two shortbread biscuits were slightly warm and went perfectly with the posit. The hospitality was all there as well. Scarlett our waitress was attentive and friendly. We also had the pleasure of meeting Alan who managed this delightful restaurant. Before leaving we had a nosy around and was surprised on the size of the whole complex. It catered for weddings, large functions etc. Highly recommend and well worth those 5*”

“Beautiful marquee, but sadly the food and service were far moodier than the name suggested. 😬 🤝 Service There were far too many staff members coming to our table, around three or four different waitresses, so nobody seemed to know what was happening. Having one main server would make things much more organised and avoid confusion. ⏳ Waiting times The service was extremely slow, and the food took far too long to arrive. We had a toddler with us who became bored very, very quickly, which made the long wait even more difficult. 🍽 Sunday roast Unfortunately, the Sunday roasts were extremely dry. We were a table of around ten people, and nearly everyone commented on how disappointing the food was. 🥣 Missing and incorrect items One order arrived incorrectly, although this was fixed relatively quickly. We were also missing gravy, which did not help an already dry roast. 🌱 Vegan option A non-vegan Yorkshire pudding was served with a vegan meal, which is a serious mistake. Dietary requirements need to be checked carefully before food leaves the kitchen. 📋 Menu The menu was surprisingly small. If you did not want a roast, there were very few alternative dishes to choose from. ⛺ Outdoor area The outdoor marquee was beautiful and handled the very hot weather well. It was clearly well maintained and was probably the highlight of the visit. 🪵 Flooring The outdoor flooring was incredibly squeaky and noisy whenever anyone walked across it. Some sturdier flooring would make the area feel much more comfortable and polished. Improvement suggestion. 👤 Assign one main server to each table so orders and requests do not get lost. ⏱ Improve waiting times, especially for larger tables and families with young children. 🌱 Double-check all vegan and dietary orders before serving them. 🍽 Improve the quality of the Sunday roasts and make sure gravy is included. 📋 Add a few more non-roast options to give customers a better choice. We have now visited twice, and unfortunately both the service and food have been consistently lacklustre. The marquee is lovely, but it cannot make up for slow service, confused orders and disappointing meals. Would I come again? Sadly, no, the mare was not the only thing feeling moody by the end! 🐴”

“We arrived just a few minutes before closing, but the owner gave us a very warm welcome and kindly let us order even though the kitchen was about to close. The hospitality was exceptional, the service was friendly and attentive, and the food was absolutely delicious. We truly appreciated the kindness and the wonderful experience. We highly recommend this restaurant to everyone, especially families. A well-deserved 10/10! 👏”
