Customer Review Summary

The carvery draws the most praise. One diner says the turkey melted in the mouth, another calls it very good and great value, and an apple pie with ice cream stands out among the desserts. A smokey bacon cheese burger earns credit for juicy beef and crispy bacon, though loaded chicken strips are called average pub food and the sweet chilli sauce made the chips soggy. Service is often described as quick, polite and friendly, but one reviewer wanted a quicker start and another found the ordering app unclear after paying. The sharpest complaints concern cooking. One weekday carvery diner reports paper thin beef, rock hard roast potatoes and parsnips burnt black, and a breakfast reviewer describes watery scrambled eggs, runny fried eggs, greasy sausages and soggy hash browns. Another thought a charge for a Yorkshire pudding was mad. Two reviewers with allergic relatives describe staff bringing out the ingredient box for a dessert so the family could check it was free of strawberries.

“Very poor ingriedients and cooking. Took my daughter for breakfast this morning as her local Spoons (Houghton Le Spring) quality had dropped recently. Been here quite a few times for the carvery lunch and always had a good meal, not quite as good as the Valley Farm in Team Valley but close enough. Breakfast, where to start, toast machine took 3 cycles to produce toast instead of warm bread. Buffet breakfast, had to wait for scrambled and fried eggs, scrambled were pretty watery, fried were not properly cooked, still had runny uncooked white running about on the top. They only brought about 8 through as they were obviously rushing cooking them. Bacon not good not bad, some very overcooked and rock hard. Sausages, horrid! squishy, greasy and over seasoned to hide the lack of meat in them, cheap and unpleasant. Has browns, thin, soggy not crispy and all you could taste was the cooking oil. I can still taste it now, over 2 hours later :( We ended up leaving most of it, see photos. Basically a complete waste of money. Spoons may have dropped in quality but it was still better than this.”

“We will not be back.!! .. Been here quite a few times and always a problem.. Today's (Monday) problem was when we asked if we could have pork, told by chef no pork only on a Sunday.. OK we said we'll have beef. Which then a slice of paper thin beef or I should say grissle and fat, the roast potatoes were uneatable, rock hard been laying there for hours parsnips burnt black it's getting worse here. The inn was very empty and very shabby, our last ever visit, just gets worse every time we have visited. .”

“Laura was very good and helpful and she was very polite and friendly I would recommend this inn to anyone in the Sunderland area as the food was nice and hot the only thing is the service at the start needs to be a little quicker apart from that Laura and the other staff members where very lovely”

“Absolutely phenomenal service, my Mam has gluten and various other allergies which are severe (risk of anaphylaxis). She’s particularly fond of Bakewell Tarts, and was really happy when she saw them on your gluten free menu. We were so incredibly grateful to a member of your team bringing the actual box they come in to let us see all of the ingredients ourselves to double check it’s safe as if my Mam has strawberries she has anaphylaxis. Sadly we didn’t get the name of the member of staff who was serving us but she was young, had blonde hair and black framed glasses. It was simply amazing how seriously allergies are taken, even if they’re an unusual one. Also, the food was absolutely delicious for all of us, and is one of the first meals as a family we’ve had out for a long time. Thank you for making an already special occasion even more wonderful! Will definitely be back again, and would recommend to those who have a gluten free diet as there are several options!”

“We had a lovely dinner at Oak Tree Farm recently, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. The menu is fantastic, particularly if you are looking for top notch vegan options. The staff were also incredibly accommodating regarding my mum in law’s food sensitivities. They truly went above and beyond for us. When we asked about a specific dessert, they actually brought out the ingredient box just to guarantee it was completely free of strawberries. It is quite rare to find a restaurant with such impressive dedication to customer care. We were absolutely thrilled with the whole evening and will definitely be coming back again. Very well done to the entire team!”
