About The Dun Cow
The Dun Cow is a pub in Sunderland on High St W, a few steps from the Sunderland Empire. The Grade II listed building was designed in 1901, and the original interior features include wood and plaster work behind the bar. It is a small pub with seats at the bar area, and a real fire heats the room. The bar serves cask ales on handpump, including a dark ale, alongside draught beers and lagers. On the food side, the kitchen makes fish and chips with curry sauce. Sunday lunch is served with puddings.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most for the real ales, with cask beers on handpump, including a dark ale, and a wide choice of other drinks. Close behind is the building itself, a Grade II listed pub from 1901 with original wood and plaster work behind the bar, a real fire and an interior several describe as stepping back in time. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and chatty, and a few praise quick service even when it gets busy. Its position a few steps from the Sunderland Empire makes it a pre theatre stop. Food draws mixed comments: one reviewer enjoyed a Sunday lunch with plentiful portions and good puddings, another praised fish and chips with a spicy curry sauce, while one found the food not as great as expected and slightly overpriced. The one clearly negative visit, before a theatre show, described miserable staff with no manners, acceptable food and no atmosphere. Others close on a simple pleasure, a pint of traditional ale by the bar.

“I had the fish n chips. The fish was fresh, the chips (with skins) were perfectly cooked. The highlight for me was the curry sauce, it had a kick of spice and the flavour was out of this world. Obviously washed down with a very nice pint of traditional ale 🍺”

“Very nice pub with lovely interior, it is a small pub but plenty of seats and some seats at bar area”

“Very good pub about 10 minutes walk from Sunderland Railway Station. Five cask beers on handpump when I visited including a dark ale. Very friendly and helpful staff. The pub is a Grade II listed building which was designed in 1901. The interior is particularly fine with wonderful wood and plaster work behind the bar.”
