About The Roe Deer
In Wordsley, Stourbridge, The Roe Deer is a pub set in Lawnswood House, a Regency mansion built between 1813 and 1816 for the Foley family and surrounded by countryside grounds. The building has high ceilings and large casement windows, and the gardens, including a wildflower area, can be reached from either car park. The menu includes a lamb shank, chorizo mussels and tiramisu, with vegan options alongside a selection of ales and other drinks. Tables in the dining room are spaced out, and a private dining room on the first floor seats 14 for groups. A Christmas set menu starts in late November, when the interior is decorated for the season. Dogs have a menu of their own.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the setting, the Regency mansion and its gardens, with the wildflower area and Christmas atmosphere singled out. Food comes close behind: the lamb shank and chorizo mussels get specific mentions, along with hearty portions and vegan options, and a menu for dogs delights one visitor. Staff are described as friendly and attentive, and one couple celebrating an anniversary received a round of drinks on the house. Several call it a little pricey, with one finding the drinks overpriced. The most detailed complaint describes a second disappointing visit: greasy beef croquettes, a lamb dish warm in some parts and cold in others, grey fish with the fish and chips, and plain brown sandwich bread and rock-hard butter, after which the couple sent back a second bottle of wine and left. Another reviewer found the tiramisu dry and plain, though still planning to return and try a different dessert.

“Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed with our visit this evening. We had previously written following a poor experience on 31st July 2026 and, as a result, had not returned until tonight. Sadly, this evening’s experience was equally disappointing, if not more so. We both ordered the beef croquettes to start. The presentation has noticeably changed and, in our opinion, has been cheapened. The croquettes themselves appeared greasy, almost as though they had been defrosted or cooked in excessive fat. For our mains, I had the lamb, which was both warm and cold in different parts of the dish, which was very disappointing. We also had the fish and chips, which seemed noticeably different from what we have previously experienced. The fish was grey in colour and certainly did not resemble the quality we have come to expect. Even the bread and butter were disappointing. The bread was simply brown sandwich bread, which we would not expect when dining here and which we sent back. The butter was also served straight from the fridge and was far too hard to use. What makes this particularly frustrating is that we had already raised concerns following our previous visit. We genuinely hoped that things would have improved, but unfortunately, tonight’s experience suggests otherwise. We were so disappointed that we actually sent our second bottle of wine back to the bar and decided to leave. It is extremely disappointing to see what appears to be a decline in food quality and standards, particularly when this was previously a place we enjoyed and expected much better from. This was another £100 spent on a meal that simply did not meet the standards we expected. I sincerely hope the management takes these concerns seriously and looks into what has happened. Another generic email from the management afraid to say we've lost confidence in this place now they’re riding high on location and the building!”

“We booked a table for lunch for two in advance and, once again, had a wonderful experience. The food was expertly prepared, beautifully presented, and full of flavour. The service was attentive and friendly without ever feeling intrusive. We have dined here on several occasions and are always impressed by the consistently high standards. The Roe Deer never disappoints, and we look forward to returning again soon. Be sure to take a moment to enjoy the lovely gardens as you make your way to the restaurant from either car park, especially the delightful wildflower area, which is well worth admiring.”

“Booked for our wedding anniversary dinner, just the two of us, we were welcomed straight away, table booked for 19:15 arrived 19:00, seated straight away to a lovely table in the back of the restaurant, lovely spaced out tables, windows open and fans on (purely because of the heat outside) We had Joe as our waiter, he was very polite and helpful thoughout the night. We ordered a round of drinks, which were on the house because it was our wedding anniversary, very nice touch, the food was outstanding, generous portions all hot and fresh, we were weren't rushed between courses, very relaxed atmosphere. Would highly recommend for a nice meal out or special occasion. Will definitely be booking again. Thank you team & Joe for a lovely night for our wedding anniversary”

“Had a really nice meal at The Roe Deer in Stourbridge. The food was fresh and well presented, the atmosphere was cosy, and the staff were friendly and attentive without being over the top. Service was quick and everything felt well organised. Definitely a great spot for a relaxed dinner or drinks with friends.”

“The Roe Deer occupies a beautiful position within an island of unspoilt countryside. As a family home, the pub was called Lawnswood House and was built for the Foley family between 1813 and 1816 during the reign of King George III, in the Regency style. This means that it has wonderful high ceilings and huge casement windows that flood the rooms with natural light from the ancient gardens that surround it. We are delighted to have found it and feel that the building lends itself beautifully as a pub, with a new stone terrace to the front, which will enjoy sunsets framed by the grand old trees, the addition of a garden room marrying perfectly the old with the new and a private dining room on the first floor which will comfortably seat 14.”
