About The Chequers Inn

The Chequers Inn is a pub in Stourbridge, at 96 High St, where tea and Lavazza coffee come with free refills all day, every day. Breakfast runs through the morning, with a large breakfast and a vegetarian breakfast on the menu. Later meals include burgers, freshly made pizzas and deli deal options, along with other vegetarian choices. The drinks list covers real ales, craft beers, gins and soft drinks, and guest cask ales appear too, including Exmoor Gold. Orders go through the Wetherspoon app, and drinks are brought to the table. Inside, an island bar sits in the middle of the pub, and plenty of windows let in daylight. Chandeliers hang overhead and red patterns mark the walls. The toilets are upstairs.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast draws the most mentions here, from a large breakfast of bacon, beans and eggs to the all day veg breakfast. Real ales come close behind, with reviewers naming Exmoor Gold despite a limited guest cask choice, and one enjoying a pint of Kopparberg in the beer garden. Several praise friendly, welcoming staff, and one reviewer reports staff refusing further service to a man who harassed her at the bar and checking on her afterward. The interior earns notice for chandeliers, red patterned walls, an island bar and plenty of windows. Complaints are specific. One diner says the nachos in the three small plates deal had barely any cheese, and that asking for more led to being sent to the chef and then banned by the manager. Another found sticky tables and menus, a broken piece of dado rail, and toilets only upstairs, while another says the small beer garden has no cover for winter. Others describe ordering through the app and getting drinks at the table within minutes.

“At the bar, I was approached by a 70 year old bloke who evidently enjoys preying on and intimidating young girls (I’m 19 by the way). He kept chatting me up, even after rejection and boundaries are made very clear, and then began being rude and calling me inappropriate names. The staff didn’t hesitant in ensuring my safety and comfortability and refusing future service to this guy, making sure he kept his distance, and telling me to come up to them for anything I need, apologising for his actions and reassuring me. I have to thank them for their service. I was checked up on and constantly watched after the event to make sure this man did not continue pestering me throughout my night and I could comfortably continue my time with my friends. Though it is the bare minimum for staff in such establishments to make sure women are kept safe, this is the best experience I’ve had with staff intervening with men who think women owe them anything. Thank you :)”

“Another pub in the chain. They are all different. Had a walk in town & arrived for the all lday veg breakfast. Got a good old'e bar in middle of pub. Heard a story, that back in timd, Robert Plant went to the Grammer School, drank in the pub. Ron Wood, also.”

“Food was quite nice, but was certainly value for money. Service was quick regarding food. Only reason for not being 5 stars is niggly things - the table and menus were sticky (cleaned, but cloth must have not been rinsed properly, if at all), you have to go upstairs for the toilet and hand washing, a piece of dado rail was broken off by the window and sticking out quite sharply. However, that said, it is a Wetherspoons, and it is cheap and cheerful food and service - I would still go again.”

“Visited with my girlfriend for a quiet bite to eat and ordered the 3 small plates deal – nachos came out with barely any cheese. Asked politely for a bit more and was told to go and speak to the chef myself. Raised it with the manager and was immediately told I was banned from the pub for questioning it and asking for a refund. No table check, no attempt to resolve anything – just straight to banning a customer over a minor complaint. I’ve noticed across a few Wetherspoons lately that food quality has gone downhill and portion sizes don’t match the prices anymore, and this just topped it off. Avoid. Plenty of better places that actually know how to treat customers.”
