About The Old Wharf Inn
The Old Wharf Inn is a pub on High St in Stourbridge, set beside the canal, with a beer garden that looks over the water. The bar pours real ales and craft spirits. The kitchen serves breakfast and three-course meals, with a roast beef main on the roast menu and lamb shoulder among the mains. Desserts include a butterscotch pecan tart. A drinking bar runs alongside the dining area, so the pub works for a meal or for drinks alone. The address is 78-80 High St.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the Sunday roast, singling out the roast beef main and the butterscotch pecan tart, with the lamb shoulder, baked sea bass with capers, pork cheek and monkfish also named as standouts. Close behind come the ravioli, praised by one diner as cooked perfectly, and a frangipani and rhubarb pudding. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and attentive, and one party was given a table with room for a pram. The caveat is inconsistency. One long review describes a wrong starter order, ravioli with leathery pasta, a fatty lamb, burnt layered potatoes and a long wait for mains, with no concession on the bill. Another praises the food but objects to loud, foul-mouthed groups of drinkers passing through the dining area to the bar, and a third finds the seating near the bar awkward because of foot traffic to the garden and toilets. Several call the value good, though one found the bill steep for the area. Many close on a Sunday lunch of three courses.

“My mum had been banging on about the food here. And so when we came back home from London,we booked a table. Saturday night. Early doors. The food was excellent. On par with anything gastro we’ve had recently. Juicy buttery monkfish, beautifully cooked and seasoned, was memorable. The view of the ring road and the packed drinking bar makes this place a really unusual mix. £90 with drinks felt steep for the area, but no complaints about the quality. Good recco mum.”

“We came yesterday for Sunday lunch and wow I’m so glad we did! The food was absolutely amazing, every single dish was cooked to perfection! Shout out to our waitress Robyn who was friendly, attentive & made us feel really welcome, can’t recommend this place enough!”

“Excellent food BUT, such a shame about the atmosphere. They serve really good food that is packed with flavour. Portion sizes are more than enough with great attention to detail. Service was just as good, really friendly and very attentive. The not so good, which mostly involved the large groups of younger drinkers that were there. Constantly passing through the dining area to the bar being very loud and foul mouthed which really spoilt the atmosphere. I visited the toilet twice and both occasions it was incredibly busy with again the younger crowd doing god knows what in the cubicle. Overall these issues made us feel uncomfortable and reluctant to visit again. I understand we visited on a busy Saturday evening but after paying good money to dine here you don’t expect that kind of behaviour from people visiting this establishment. I think the owners really need to tighten up on this as this will only encourage more of the wrong crowd to visit. I did see doormen around but maybe they need to be more proactive.”

“Third time visiting, Jack and the team providing 5* service which is reflected such high level food. Highly recommend both the weekday and Sunday menu. Will be back for sure.”

“I’ve eaten here a lot and the food quality is constantly inconsistent sometimes it’s brilliant other times poor. My last trip left a lot to be desired but this time it was even worse. Tonight was the worst it’s been. Firstly the service throughout the evening was shocking. The waitress took a starter down incorrectly (this had happened before when we had eaten here too, they need to get into the process of reading the order back to dinner to ensure it’s correct) they then asked if I would still like the starter brought that I had originally. I of course said yes but was then told the there was a backlog of orders in the kitchen and I would have to wait some time for it. The other guest had received their starter and was eating it. I had to ask for the ticket to be pushed to the front of the queue due to the error. No concession of this error was made to the bill . When the starters came there was no flavour in the spinach or ricotta ravioli and the pasta was like leather (poorly made) and hard (I think where it had sat under the heat lamp). The serving size even for a starter was far too small it was so small it was served on a side plate. After waiting over an 1 and half hours for the mains they finally hit the table. I opted for the lamb which whilst it was tender it was incredibly fatty, it was served with peas which came with no more than a heaped tablespoonful there wasn’t enough of them. We had to ask for two extra jugs of the jus (as two people had the lamb) only one was brought over and the layered potatoes were really burnt to the point we didn’t eat them. At £28 we expected the dish to be faultless with no element burnt and it needed to be a larger portion of peas and jus too. Now I’m only petite and one course usually fills me up - I normally leave some food. But after this second course I was still really hungry so I went for a third course of the chocolate torte this was delicious and the serving size was more than adequate. The service throughout evening was shocking from incorrect orders being taken to over 1 hour wait on food at one point we even had to get up from the table to go to the bar to change two water glasses that had all lipstick stains around the rims of them. The wait on drinks from being taken to served was too long. My three course and a soft drink cost me £50.50 the service, size of the dishes and quality of the cooking did not live up to this cost. Overall a terrible experience and I will not be giving them a third chance for redemption you have lost a customer that use to love your food.”
