Customer Review Summary
Long-standing regulars, some dining here since the Burgess Road days, return for curries they call consistently superb, with the madras, the chicken tikka masala and the fish curry singled out by name. Bhajis and a lamb biryani ordered extra spicy also earn praise, and reviewers describe the staff as friendly, welcoming and attentive. The criticism is specific. One reviewer found the chicken pakora stale and the malai kofta sickeningly sweet after asking for it extra spicy, and another wanted more lamb in the biryani. Two reviewers mention a wait for food in a busy room, and a couple suggest booking because the restaurant is small. One diner recommends sharing the naans, which are very big.

“I track my calories using an app that scans my photos. The chicken dish fitted my remaining allowance and had plenty of protein. The restaurant was quiet when I walked in.”

“I visited this restaurant with my friends for dinner. The food was tasty with authentic South Indian taste. The fish curry was the best among everything that we ordered. The staff was nice and welcoming. Overall a nice experience.”

“Been coming here over a decade. Food is always superb. Service exemplary. Such kind and accommodating people that work here. It can get busy but that’s because everyone in the area knows it’s the best Indian restaurant around! There’s a place in Shirley I went to where people were washing their feet in the sink in full view of customers! Kohinoor in Portswood on the other hand is immaculately clean, welcoming, and I’ve never had a bad meal, either eating in or take out.”

“Been coming to Kohinoor since it opened in Portswood and before that when they were on Burgess Road. The food has been consistently good and the staff always very friendly and welcoming. It’s our number 1 curry house to go to and my family who live abroad can’t wait to visit when they’re in the country. You will not be disappointed.”

“I’ve just arrived home after enjoying yet another exquisite meal at Koh I noor of Kerala. I have just read a ridiculous 1star review so felt obliged to write this one. I have been dining at Koh I noor and their previous restaurant on Burgess Road for 24 years. During that time the food has always been and still is absolutely superb, in my opinion the best Indian restaurant in the area. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming and the service is second to non. Because they are always busy there may occasionally be a bit of a wait for your food but the wait is always well worth it. I can’t recommend this place highly enough and if you appreciate high quality food in nice surroundings with fantastic service then pay them a visit. You will not be disappointed.”
