About House of the Rising Sun

House of the Rising Sun is a cocktail bar at 18 Butcher Row in Shrewsbury, with an aquarium-style backsplash behind the bar. The kitchen serves Australian-style tapas small plates meant for sharing, so the menu has no separate starters and mains. Bao buns are part of that lineup, including a prawn and crayfish version. The cocktail list includes the Land of Smiles alongside classics such as the Mojito. Downstairs works more as a bar with music, while upstairs is more formal. Vegetarian and vegan options are on the menu, vegan churros among them, and a 4 course set menu is available for those who want a fixed sequence. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the bao buns, with the prawn and crayfish version described as exceptional and another diner calling them great but wishing for two per order. Beef is called tender by one reviewer, while the katsu is praised as crispy and the vegan churros as a treat. The Land of Smiles cocktail is a highlight for its spicy kick, and the service and lively atmosphere draw steady praise, including staff who were patient when a toddler threw rice mid meal.

“What a lovely place. My wife and 1 year old popped in for some food on a busy Saturday. The staff were really accommodating and patient as our son decided to throw rice everywhere mid meal! Loads of veggie options and a great atmosphere. Would definitely come back for a date night just the two of us!!”

“Great service, nice drink options and really nice lively atmosphere but the food is very very far from it. Tostada was not crispy, which made it basically inedible, most of the other food was incredibly bland. Tempura Aubergine was nicest dish but needed some sauce. Come for drinks and service, do not come if food is the main reason you are coming.”

“Loved this place. Menu seemed pricey but honestly portions are great and food is such high quality. Great summer picky tapas. Will definitely return.”

“We visited last week for our 10 year anniversary; plans were extremely last minute as our previous reservation had cancelled on us!! Not only was the food exceptional (I’m still dreaming about the prawn and crayfish bao buns!), the staff and team at House of the Rising Sun are WONDERFUL!! Shout out to Jonathan who is a wonderful, kind, caring, conscientious and thoughtful human being; he really does go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable and settled. We will be returning!!!!”

“It was all fine but just not for me. This I put down to my age and not realising this is a bar that does tapas dishes as opposed to a traditional restaurant I thought I was going to. The food was good albeit expensive (especially for Shrewsbury) with prices more in line with London. The menu confused not only me but also the group next to us that struggled with why there weren't listed starters and main dishes. I guess the waiting staff have to explain this constantly to more mature patrons like myself. Again, nothing wrong with this venue (good food, service and atmosphere) it just wasn't for me.”
