About The Boathouse

The Boathouse is a Mock Tudor bar and grill on New St in Shrewsbury, with a wooden deck at the river's edge and views over the water. Dogs are welcome, and a canopied area is set aside for them. Exposed beams run through the pub, and a garden room can be opened up to add extra tables. The bistro-style menu includes a pulled pork burger, a pulled pork hot dog and gluten free fish and chips. Sunday lunch is served and finishes before the evening. Reservations are taken for Sunday lunch and evening tables. Parking is limited, so the walk in from the city centre via the Port Hill Suspension Bridge is the alternative route.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the riverside setting, describing lovely views over the water and a dedicated canopy area that suited a dog and an older grandparent. The food comes close behind, with the gluten free fish and chips singled out by a diner whose mother had not found a decent version since going gluten free. Others mention a steak called spot-on, and lamb with sticky toffee pudding for a Mother's Day lunch. Staff are described as friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable, and one party credits the management with opening the garden room for a wedding group that had not booked. Complaints centre on the kitchen. One diner received a cold lamb tagine, replaced by what seemed a microwaved dish with clumped couscous. Another found the pulled pork hot dog had undercooked-looking sausages. A third reports a roast dinner with a burnt Yorkshire pudding after a late booking. One Sunday visitor was told Sunday lunch had finished while the next table was served it, yet the apologetic waitress and supervisor waived the bill and offered a return complimentary Sunday lunch.

“The worst meal we ate in Shrewsbury. The roast dinner consisted of beef, roast potatoes, mash, one carrot, one piece of courgette and a burnt Yorkshire pudding. We booked for 7.30 I think all the edible food must have finished. Never again.”

“Lovely sitting overlooking the river. The music was perfect, not too loud but perfect for a chilled lunch”

“Was able to provide a last minute table during a beautifully sunny day when the pub was packed for a large party of 8. Food was excellent, especially the gluten free fish and chips. My mom hasn't had decent fish and chips since she went gluten free and this was the first place to impress her! Staff were lovely and attentive, bar staff were knowledgeable and welcoming. Great atmosphere”

“Definitely glad we made a reservation, as there was a dedicated area under the canopy, perfect for the dog and aging grandparent! Also had nice views over the river, which were cooler too. We were greeted with enthusiasm and everything was very efficient and friendly. Drinks arrived quickly and the food was also in good time. Food was excellent and again, the servers were all very friendly and cheerful. Would highly recommend and look forward to returning.”
