  “So. The Peacock at Owler Bar was the last of the Longbow pubs that I had yet to visit, obviously excluding the Peacock at Rowsley, which seems a little fancy for me. Also that new one in Bakewell that isn’t open yet. I’d spotted the pub previously, over the years, but had never fancied it in its previous incarnation, which was some sort of chain I think – like a Hungry Horse, something awful and Toby Carvery-esque like that? Anyhow, I was aware it has been taken over and refurbished last year, and I like the other pubs in this chain, so thought I’d give it a go this week, having already visited The Maynard and The Ashford Arms – it was extraordinarily foggy up there, but found it nonetheless, through the guiding hand of a nine-tailed fox (or possibly a satnav, I forget..) – it’s off of that weird double roundabout junction thing that’s up at Owler Bar (is it complex enough to be a gyratory?). The pub has a decent sized car park, which is handy, because I don’t think I’d be getting here any other way… Maybe a stout-walk out of Sheffield in the summer.. Didn’t book on this occasion, as it was a wet and foggy Thursday in February, not exactly prime ‘going out’ time – found the pub to be moderately busy still, but there were tables available for walk-ins. I would book later in the year though, as this pub is clearly going to be popular. Nice pub inside – I had a strong feeling of déjà vu though, as if I have been here before. It seemed very familiar, so perhaps in another life. I was a bit concerned it would have the same menu as The Ashford Arms – not necessarily a bad thing, but I like variety – it turned out to be very similar, with overlaps, but with strong divergency – even the Derbyshire pie of the week was different. Didn’t order a starter, as three courses on a Thursday felt like too much food, so straight into the main – the chicken Milanese. This was a good-sized meal – a flattened chicken breast, deep fried until golden and laid across a bed of tomato sauce and Parmentier potatoes. The potatoes comprised a variety of breeds – there were normal ones, sweet ones and purple ones (I don’t know potato names…). Lovely dish though, good sized portion. Had a bowl of onion rings on the side – I adore onion rings and felt that this was pub that would make their own. I was right, big, fluffy and gorgeous rings. Very little oil. Yum. Following the main, dessert was calling. I had spotted a chocolate and Grand Marnier Yule log on the menu. Whilst it is February, and the Christmas lies far behind us, I do love a good Yule log. This one was decent, but it wasn’t a Yule log, it was a Swiss roll – not bad though, as I also like Swiss roll. Overall, a good meal, well made and solidly presented. The icing on the cake was getting 30% off the bill using the Longbow App – now that’s a good offer. If only I’d noticed that on Tuesday before going to The Maynard.. 😃 The beer was Pravha – a bit heavy for me, so not one I would choose again. We live and learn.”

  “Came here for a special family Sunday lunch, and we had booked our table, which I would recommend based on how busy it was. Service was great and loved the decor. Almost too much to choose from and I was struggling to decide between the veggie burger or the veggie Sunday lunch. In the end, my son decided to have the latter so I could taste it whilst having the burger and both meals were delicious. The rest of our family enjoyed their meals with all plates cleared and we were all too full for desserts. Good options for kids and vegetarians.”

  “Absolutely amazing! Booked on the day was so happy to get a table! Sat next to the fire it was lovely. I had duck breast and my husband had the chicken supreme both were outstanding in taste and presentation. I'm gluten free and the menu is brilliant so much choice! I had the miniature desserts with fizz for desert I ate everything on the plate I couldn't fault it. Our waitress Anya was perfect honestly she couldn't be any more attentive, friendly and personable. My husband commented how good she was and that's high praise indeed! Can't wait to come again!”
