About The Red Lion
The Red Lion is a free house pub in Reading, on Church Rd, serving Thai dishes alongside traditional English pub food. The drinks side centres on a real ale and beer selection, which suits a pub that runs its own choice of what to pour. The kitchen offers a Sunday roast, and the lunch menu includes jacket potatoes. Inside, there is a fire and chairs by the window. Reservations are required, and dogs are welcome. Food can involve a wait, so the kitchen suits a relaxed meal rather than a quick stop. Plenty of parking is available on site.

Reviewers most often mention sunday roast, thai dishes, jacket potatoes and homemade spring rolls.
Customer Review Summary
Sunday roast is the most praised dish, with one diner calling it the best in a while with a perfect portion and another describing it as beautifully presented. Close behind are the homemade spring rolls, crispy beef on noodles, and a meal of risotto, steak and cheesecake that one reviewer found perfectly done. Jacket potatoes from the lunch menu and small plates also get called tasty. Reviewers also mention the roaring fire, comfy window chairs, the garden, real ale and a decent beer selection, along with friendly, attentive service under the new owners. Walkers and dog owners say they stopped in on their way past. One visitor found the covered outdoor area was hard car park rather than grass and felt the location limits how busy the pub gets. Slow food is the main complaint. The Sunday roast diner waited quite a while, and a birthday party waited so long for their meals that they said they would have left earlier had anyone explained the delay.

“Stopped off for a drink while walking to the roman remains. Saw a few meals come out so dived in for some of our own. Pretty good but not perfect. The outdoor covered space was unfortunately hard car park rather than grass but server the purpose. The location is probably the biggest handicap to getting more visitors or it would be busier.”

“We had a lovely visit to this local pub. We started with drinks in the garden, which was a really relaxing setting, and then moved inside for our meal. The service was so attentive from start to finish, making us feel really well looked after. The food was absolutely delicious, and everything was freshly prepared. Overall, a fantastic experience, definitely worth a visit!”

“Best Sunday roast I have had in a while. Visited as we have noticed this pub on way for a walk with a dog. Friendly service, we waited quite a while for food but it was worth it. Portion was perfect too. Everything was cooked to perfection. Absolutely delicious”

“Great traditional country pub with very tasty food. The place has a really nice atmosphere, friendly staff and a good selection of drinks, including real ale. The menu is varied, with a mix of traditional pub food and a decent selection of Thai dishes. They have a decent sized beer garden and plenty of parking. Would thoroughly recommend!”

“What a lovely pub this is. Beautiful and cosy and the lady serving was very attentive, 3 small plates for £15 was really delicious and a great deal!”
