About The Alehouse

At 2 Broad St in Reading, The Alehouse is a real ale pub with beer pump clips and brew decals covering its walls and ceilings. The bar pours a changing range of real ales, craft beers and real ciders, and the beer list includes Belgian beers alongside traditional British styles. Food is limited to pickled eggs and crisps, so the focus stays on the drinks. Regulars keep their own permanent beer mugs at the pub. Small nooks and little rooms sit toward the back, down the corridor.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers come for the beer selection, from traditional British real ales to Belgian bottles, some at 13% alcohol, with Budvar and a white IPA among the pints drinkers call reasonably priced. One reviewer finds fewer modern beers and more traditional styles, though a few weird and wonderful ones turn up. Close behind is the crowd. Several describe regulars who welcome visitors, buy a solo drinker a couple of pints, and turn a quick stop into an afternoon of conversation. The small interior earns praise for its cozy nooks and little rooms down the back corridor, with beer pump clips and bric-a-brac covering the walls and ceilings, plus a spot out front for sitting in the sun. One reviewer enjoyed hearing Iron Maiden and Judas Priest over the speakers. The trade-offs are modest: the pub is small and crowded by mid-afternoon, spilling onto the sidewalk, and one visitor notes there is no food beyond pickled eggs and crisps. Regulars keep their own permanent beer mugs, and one visitor stayed for hours after joining two men playing chess.

“When i almost had given hope of finding a place to listen to some good music in town i bumped into this place, absolutely awesome, they have a really good variety of beer taking into account it's a small place and very reasonable priced like a pint of white ipa for 4'90£, inside there are some nice, cozy small rooms if you are looking for some privacy, the public is mainly locals and the cool type, they played a little bit of everything including my favourite: iron maiden, judas priest, staff was nice too.”

“Had 2 pints of budvar and price was good but best was the staff and customers. Only came in for a quick pint stayed as I started talking to the 2 gentlemen playing chess and what a treat. Nice conversation, all sorts of beers, ales and such.. Lots of Belgian beers as well some 13% alcohol. And being belgian myself I was shocked as I have lived in Reading for 3 years and never came inside here. Top tip walk towards the back of the pub for amazing labirynth of little nooks and crannies with tables and chairs. Amazing pub.”

“We stopped by a year ago while on a day trip from London, and thought this bar/pub quaint. This time we came to the UK just to visit Reading and had to return to the Ale house. We were just going to stop by for an afternoon beer (they really don't serve food - unless you count pickled eggs or crisps) but we ended up staying for several hours. At 15:00 the place was crowded (it is pretty small anyway) and spilling out onto the sidewalk out front. The people (most of whom were clearly regulars) were welcoming and treated us as if we had been their friends and neighbors for years; they made us feel like part of the crowd. Reading is a very nice small city, and has a lot to offer, but coming to the Alehouse is almost sufficient reason alone to visit.”

“Great selection of bevs at great prices, great service, and plenty of character-lending brew decals and bric-a-brac to gawk at while drinking.”

“This pub is small and cosy, nestled along the bustling high street and embellished with beer pump clips adorning its walls and ceilings. A few cozy chambers are tucked away down the corridor behind.”
