About Schoolhouse Devon

Schoolhouse Devon is a Mediterranean-influenced restaurant and takeaway on Mothecombe in Plymouth, set in an old schoolhouse building a few minutes' walk from the sea. The garden has covered dining in rustic wood shack-like structures, which gives groups and families a sheltered place to eat. The menu is short and leans on seafood and fish, including fish and chips with a children's portion, alongside pizza such as a duck pizza. Homemade bread is served. The team also runs a calendar of special nights through the year, from summer barbecues and live music to full foodie feasts. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the beach-side setting in an old schoolhouse and the fresh food. One table shared a heritage tomato and burrata salad, boquerones, rosemary fries and bread, while another singled out fresh seafood and homemade bread from a short menu. Several describe the staff as friendly or pleasant, though service draws mixed reports. One group waited around 20 minutes to be acknowledged, then found the menus were outside by the serving hatch and left without ordering. Another had an order slightly wrong and no check on the meal. Price is the most recurring complaint. Reviewers call lunch and a kids' fish and chips expensive, describe a duck pizza with hardly any toppings, and object to a 12.5% service charge added automatically. A few also found the grounds tired looking, with weeds and broken tables near the entrance. One returning visitor still enjoys the beer garden in summer, wishes the BBQ were a more regular event and misses the tiramisu that used to be on the dessert menu.

“The main building is a small old schoolhouse and outside two shabby small shack like places house covered sitting areas. Enclosed area (garden🤔) Dirty tables, spillages and birds mess, in unmown area. Old Rustic spaces made out of old wood, which have been added to grounds of a lovely old small building, Schoolhouse. Has 2 large tables inside. Other areas around schoolhouse tatty. Old bbq? Junk etc near entrance to toilets. Very unsightly. Miserable young girl serving drinks at counter. £4.20 for a coffee! I did try and make conversation but she just said "um". £23 for a pizza, we did not indulge. £7.50 for bottle of cider and £5 for 330ml can of alcohol free lager. Very pricey. Will not be returning.”

“This place really surprises my partner and me. The location could not been better, surrended by nature, it keeps the original structure and layout of the old school. We were sitting in a typical romantic table kinda of imerse in the garden, the vibe was nice. The staff were friendly, special mention to Beth, she was very accommodating and professional. The food was a whole suprise itself, short menu, high quality, fresh seafood, homemade bread. Definitely the kind of place to be surprised”

“We had a lovely lunch at The Schoolhouse today. The food was really fresh & delicious; we shared, between 2 , the heritage tomato and burrata salad, boquorones, rosemary fries and the bread. The service was brilliant (Saturday and 24 degrees) from the 2 young lads that served us (especially the lad from near Manchester)”

“What a shame. This place could be an absolute gem but gives the vibe that no one really cares. It is an old school house with a themed interior but we found it grubby and tired looking with weeds and broken tables to greet you as you walk in. The food was ok but expensive with 12.5% auto actually added. The staff were very pleasant. We won't go back. It's in a fab location but another £6.50 for the car park.”

“Lovely little spot, average food/ over priced and wait staff not very professional. £20 for a duck pizza with hardly any toppings on it. Just not a great experience, I would recommend going elsewhere. Beach down the road is great”
