About The Maltsters
The Maltsters is a pub on The Hill in Norwich, set beside Malthouse Broad in Ranworth on the Norfolk Broads, with boats moored up on the Staithe. Boaters tie up nearby and come in to eat, so the kitchen serves walkers and people off the water alike. The menu includes beer battered fish and a pie, and the chicken tikka flatbread comes with skewers, fries, coleslaw, salad and dips. Drinks are served bar side. Dogs are welcome, which suits anyone bringing a pet along on a day out by the water. Tables can be booked. The pub is reached by a single track road with passing places, and it has its own parking, which can fill up.

Customer Review Summary
Staff draw the most praise, with reviewers repeatedly describing the team as friendly and attentive, from a complimentary smaller steak offered when the sirloin ran out to a fresh water bowl brought for each dog. Food comes close behind: the chicken tikka flatbread arrived on an enormous plate with skewers, fries and coleslaw, and others single out the beer battered fish, a brilliant pie, a beef burger with sweet onion sauce, and chips described as crispy and not greasy. Many dined after mooring their boats, and the Broads setting, with seating outside and a view of the boats, comes up often. The food draws the main criticism. One reviewer found the goats cheese waldorf salad let down by untoasted hazelnuts with skins on and cheese cut from a roll, and the flat ironed chicken not flattened at all. Another called the fish finger sandwich small with no chips, and the ploughman's thin on bread and portion. One noted a loud group at the bar, and another said the car park was full.

“Ate here whilst moored at Ranworth. Booked a table for 5pm, the building was empty at that time. Drinks were served bar side and food came out quickly. The food was brilliant and the staff were extremely professional and friendly. The only downside was a loud group drinking at the bar behind our table. Overall, I can whole heatedly recommend eating here and if I am out this way again, I will be!”

“Superb staff, very attentive, clearly well trained to maximise client and business. Common sense and cannot emphasise enough how engaging, polite, friendly, direct and observant. Why cannot others be this well trained, basics done very well with a smile... top draw! Food excellent, quick service, brilliant pie. Perfectly cooked piping hot. Atmosphere, good music, mixed clientel meaning inclusive but rather odd atmosphere. No issues, but very varied. Excellent staff mean we would return. Thank you.”

“1st visit, beautiful location, a lot of boats moored up on the Staithe, the road here is a single track road with passing places, staff are very efficient and friendly, we found the food a little disappointing, I had the goats cheese waldorf salad, the salad was good, more walnuts instead of hazelnuts as they are difficult to pick up, still had the skins on and would have been nicer if toasted, I felt the goats cheese could have been better quality as it was cut from a roll, my son had the flat ironed chicken which wasn't flattened at all just a lump of chicken with the knuckle left on, but saying that we did consume it, lovely coffee, would we visit again 100% we would even though it's a decent drive for us to visit”

“Amazing place! lively atmosphere, fantastic service. BEST chips: crispy outside, not greasy at all, and very clean feeling. Brilliant beef burger, very impressive sweet onion sauce. Shame the burger disappeared too quickly without a photo. Children enjoyed it too!”

“Absolutely fantastic! Six of us dined for an evening meal after mooring up our boats. We had starters, mains and desserts and non of us had any complaints the food was excellent. Lovely choice of drinks and clean glasses, which seems to be a novelty these days. The place itself is attractive, well kept and comfortable. The icing on the cake was the staff, particularly the manager (who turned out to be the owner along with this family running this restaurant) they couldn't do enough for us even brought our dogs a fresh water bowl each! The whole evening was very pleasant and we look forward to returning, so please keep up the good work.”
