About The Rushcutters

The Rushcutters is a 16th-century Grade II listed Chef & Brewer pub on Yarmouth Rd in Thorpe St Andrew, Norwich, standing on the north bank of the River Yare. Its beer garden sits beside the river, so the water is part of the setting outdoors. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast with beef rib and all the trimmings, and puddings include sticky toffee pudding in a cast-iron skillet pan. Hot drinks arrive with mini puddings, among them a mini tiramisu in a coffee cup. The food runs across three menus, and a dairy free menu is available for those who need it. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often point to the riverside setting, from the beer garden to window tables looking onto the water. The food draws praise too, led by the Sunday roast, where one reviewer describes a tender beef rib with honey and mustard chipolatas and all the trimmings. Desserts come close behind, including sticky toffee pudding served in a skillet, the triple chocolate brownie and a mini tiramisu in a coffee cup. Others mention the confit duck leg, steak and ale pie, fish and chips, a steak sandwich and a dairy free menu with a large choice. Staff are widely called friendly, but the picture is mixed. Two reviewers found the mixed grill dry and chewy, with gammon and steak singled out, and one received garlic mushrooms as a single mushroom on dry toast. Drinks prices are called extortionate by two reviewers. One says a hot chocolate was forgotten until they reminded the staff, and another gave up waiting at the table and ordered at the bar.

“So pleased with my visit with my friend here. I have a dairy intolerance, and was so pleasantly surprised to get a menu dairy free with such a large choice. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the meal was so good and reasonably priced. Loved it, will definitely come again. Thank you.”

“Very scenic, however service is non existent and the food we had was awful. Mixed grill the gamon & beef were very chewy, no flavour. The other order of our table was a steak which was fairly pink but that was ok, however it was so chewy like rubber. Such a shame as it’s a very nice place with great scenery. Wouldn’t bother for food but drinks definately. Seems the food quality has gone very downhill”

“Food was a huge let down, Started with Garlic Mushrooms..... Arrived as 1 Mushroom, on dry toast with a splash of garlic sauce Mains.... Seafood Mixed Grill... Grilled to death, salmon was white, prawns were dry and crumbling, they even managed to burn the peas? How? I had the mixed grill, Again dry chicken, chewy steak, lump of gammon from a joint, not a gammon steak, the sausage and chips were ok though. £10+ for a double JD and coke, nearly paid for bottle there, £7 for my pint. The staff, when they were there, were pleasant and chatty, ended up ordering at the bar though, as we were waiting so long at the table. The overall atmosphere was nice, had a table by a window so we could at least see out to the river”

“We recently visited The Rushcutters in Norwich for a family lunch to celebrate a relative's 60th birthday, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The riverside location provides a lovely setting, and the food was excellent. There were five of us in the party, although one person wasn't hungry and chose not to eat. The rest of us ordered main courses, all of which were well-cooked, flavourful, and beautifully presented. Our meals included a chicken and bacon sandwich with skin-on fries, two fishcakes served with vegetables, and a pan-fried chicken breast with vegetables and a delicious carrot and red pepper sauce. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. We couldn't resist trying the desserts, and they certainly didn't disappoint. The sticky toffee pudding with custard was rich, filling, and served in a cast-iron skillet pan – something I had never seen before, even as a former hotel manager. The mini puddings with hot drinks were also excellent value. Two of our party chose the mini tiramisu, which was cleverly served in a coffee cup, while another had the mini Bakewell pudding, which was so generous they couldn't quite finish it! The total bill came to just £75 for four meals, desserts, drinks, and the non-dining member of our party, thanks to vouchers from the Greene King app. Outstanding value for money. Overall, a fantastic meal in a beautiful riverside setting with friendly service, delicious food, and great value. We will definitely be returning and would highly recommend The Rushcutters to anyone visiting Norwich.”

“It's a very nice location on the river, and it's a lovely building. The staff are warm and friendly, with for the most part good service. However they did completely forget a hot chocolate that I ordered, when it was quite quiet too, and in the end we had to ask about it, and remind them. The prices appear to have become extortionate since my last visit, with a pint of beer and a pint of Coke costing £16 and something pence !”
