Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the service, with the bar staff and servers praised for staying friendly and quick on a busy Tuesday or a crowded afternoon, and the food close behind. Roast dinners get the most detail, including a pork belly roast described as cooked to perfection, while the fish and chips, battered haddock, a vegan burger and a chicken schnitzel with mash and creamy sauce also earn praise. Seating by the river, with doors opening onto the water, comes up repeatedly, and one boating visitor walked over from the yacht station. The drinks on draught are called great. The caveats are modest but specific: one diner found a roast chicken a bit dry, another felt two roast potatoes was tight, and one called a chocolate mousse overpriced enough to skip dessert next time. One reviewer felt the food wasn't five stars despite the excellent service, and one found the conservatory table a little warm. Several describe plates cleared and plans to return.

“Had a wonderful evening. Went for a small birthday celebration and had Emilia serving us, she was incredible. For a Tuesday it was a busy day and she was rushed off her feet with the number of talles she had but she gave incredible service to us. The food was great too.”

“Really enjoyed how all the staff treated us. They were very busy, and the food wasn't 5 stars but I wasn't disappointed. The menu has plenty of options and we had unbelievable service from Elliot. I've worked in this industry and Elliot is an absolute gem. The sort of service you come back for and we will be back. Thankyou everyone at the red lion.”

“Had a family meal here a few days ago when my Canadian family were visiting as a party of 7. Great service - the staff were very accommodating. We had a lovely table right by the doors opening up onto the river which was perfect as it was such a hot afternoon . We all loved the food. Fresh and good sized portions. Firm favourites were the fish + chips and the vegan moving mountains burger. Pub is in a fantastic location. Thankyou all.”

“Had an absolutely brilliant time at The Red Lion on Bishopgate in Norwich, and a huge part of that was down to James behind the bar. From the moment we walked in, he made us feel genuinely welcome. Not just served, but looked after. James has that rare mix of professionalism and personality. He’s quick, attentive, and clearly knows his craft, but what really stands out is his attitude. Friendly without being overbearing, chatty without slowing things down, and he somehow keeps everything running smoothly even when it’s busy. Drinks were spot on every time, recommendations were great, and the whole experience just felt easy and enjoyable because of him. It’s the kind of service that turns a good pub into a great one. If you’re stopping by, you’ll know exactly who I mean. James is an absolute credit to the place. We’ll definitely be back!”
