About The Old Inn, Widecombe

The Old Inn, Widecombe is a pub in Newton Abbot that has served as a pub for over two hundred years. Dogs are welcome, with water bowls, treats at the bar and a canine menu, so owners can bring a dog along for a meal. The garden has a moorland view and is home to chickens and ducks. Flagstone floors run through the older part of the building, while the newer part comes from an expansion by a previous owner, and a log burner provides fireside seating. The kitchen cooks its food on site, with a beef and ale pie, a vegan pie and a ploughman's lunch that is big enough to share. Beers are on tap at the bar, and board games are on hand for the table. Live jazz plays in a separate room. A small shop inside the inn stocks supplies.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the generous portions of home-style pub food, with the beef and ale pie praised for its buttery, flaky pastry and intensely flavoured filling. Close behind are the ploughmans lunch, described as large enough to share, with good bread, chutney and ham, along with a Sunday roast, the vegan pie, the ultimate chip butty, triple fried chips and an enormous fish. A cheeseboard is suggested as a savoury dessert. Staff come up repeatedly as friendly, helpful and cheerful, and one party of 18 on a busy Sunday lunchtime was catered for effortlessly. The warm, cosy atmosphere gets mentions of log burner and fireside seating, live jazz and morris dancing, and board games. Dogs are welcomed, with water bowls, treats, a canine menu and a doggy cupcake for one visitor. The one complaint is that a Christmas dinner was good quality but could have been hotter, and one visitor found the car park unlit. A motorhome owner who was allowed to park overnight and then enjoyed a meal closes out the praise.

We had a fabulous meal, it was delicious. Also dog friendly so little Walter the dog was happy! They had plenty of water bowls and treats and dog snacks at bar! “This pub is absolutely amazing, fully recommend it. Had the ploughmans lunch and wow the portions and quality was spectacular. I recommend sharing because its so large. Great quality bread, chutney, ham, etc. Coleslaw can be iffy sometimes, but this one tasted fresh and had a great mustard sauce. Ambiance is lovely and so are the staff”

“The Old inn has been a pub for over two hundred years we are situated in the middle of the village with a large free car park(for patrons). The pub is quite usually big for a moorland pub due to expansion from previous owner's, the pub has a traditional flag stone floors in the old part with more modern fresh feel in the newer part. The pub also boost a larger garden complete with moorland view as well as chickens and ducks. We serve home cooked food all day from 12pm-9pm and Sunday 12pm-4pm for food and 6pm for drinks.”
