About Welcome Stranger
The Welcome Stranger is a family-owned pub in Liverton, Newton Abbot, set off the dual carriageway behind Trago. Its beer garden overlooks Haytor and has a bouncy castle and climbing frame, so parents can sit down to eat while the children play. Meals are served in a converted barn, and the original pub and bar area keeps a small fireplace. The kitchen cooks homemade pub dishes such as chicken and bacon pie and lasagne, and the large menu includes an onion loaf starter served with BBQ sauce. Desserts are made to order. Food is served all day, and the pub is walk-in.

“The Welcome Stranger is a family owned business and is a most definitely a favorite with the locals! Located just a short journey from the A38, with ample amount of on site car parking. Our menu is made up of all home-cooked dishes, which our chefs enjoy packing with tons of flavor. We offer plentiful portions and delicious, made to order desserts, so there is a certainty that you leave with your belly full. The food is fantastic, the team are friendly, the drinks are flowing but if you need a further reason to visit... “When we arrived it was busy. We had booked a table and although there were 6 of us the table felt very cramped. The food took a while to come out and even though it was busy was still good. One of our group asked for another drink and gave the young man his glass. We had eaten our food and the drink had still not arrived. Once we had finished our food it took 25 minutes for our plates to be taken away. We were asked if we wanted dessert and gave us the menus. It took another 15 minutes for someone to take our dessert order and even then we had to ask. There seemed to be a lot of chatting around the bar area as by this time the place was fairly quiet. When the desserts arrived one of them was wrong so by the time the right one arrived we were almost finished. The raspberry pavlova had very few raspberries on it, it was mainly sauce. Very disappointing as normally everything is very good”

“We ordered fish and chips and steak and kidney pudding. Absolutely awful. Couldn't eat it. Battery was chewy, fish was grey. Pudding crust was rock hard and the meat was thick and tasteless.”

“Visited today as a family of 6. 3 meals were presented in reasonable time with the veg for the group. After waiting 15 minutes or so I asked about the other 3 meals. Another 5 minutes and they were served. By which time the veg had gone cold. I asked for some more which arrived in about another 5 minutes. 2 of us who were served first enjoyed their meal. The cold OAP roasts were not very nice. Catering beef and a bitter tasting gravy. Overall not recommended.”

“Just off the duel carriageway and behind Trago Newton Abbot. The food and service was excellent. Huge portions reasonable price, loads for the kids to do and a good selection of drinks for the adults. A real hidden gem in my opinion.”

“Lovely pub which we wished we had found sooner! Staff were very welcoming from start to finish. The garden area was perfect for our daughter, plenty of things to play on including a bouncy castle and climbing frame whilst we had a drink. We really enjoyed the food too which we sat in the bar area for but there was a separate dining area too which seemed lovely. Would definitely recommend to anyone with or without kids 😊”
