About Brownlow arms

Brownlow Arms is a pub in Newark where the bar is crafted from an old rowing boat. The food menu includes fish and chips and a chicken burger, and a steak night runs as a regular feature. Live music comes from a singer or performer, with an outdoor staging area set beside an enormous willow tree. Children have a play area with slides and a rope swing. A camping site sits opposite the pub entrance, with a static caravan area behind it and camping pitches by the River Trent. Dogs are welcome, and walks run along the river.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the food, singling out the fish and chips, a chicken burger and the Saturday steak night, with Sunday dinner also described as cooked perfectly. Close behind come the friendly staff and the beer, which reviewers call good and reasonably priced. Several mention live music, including a Saturday singer, and one reviewer points to the outdoor staging area. The bar made from an old rowing boat and the seats under a large willow tree get a mention, along with walks along the River Trent and slides and a rope swing for children. Campers are more divided. Two reviewers criticise the site, citing a strong smell from a nearby animal by-product plant, a landlady who spoke sharply about the pitch allocation for a one-night booking, and entertainment that ran well past 10pm. Another describes showers that ran only cold or steaming hot, with light sensors cutting out so that one shower was taken in the dark by phone torch.

“Had a fantastic stay here, I arrived on my own and was quickly showed to my pitch by the lovely owner, my pitch was right infront of the live band who were amazing. I didn’t have food but heard good things. I made friends with quite a few people and had a lovely night. Good for children as there’s slides and a rope swing. I’m already planning to come back soon and also next year in summer it was one of the best sites I’ve stayed on.”

“Great place, top food, staff are happy and friendly and the atmosphere was brilliant. Live singer on when we stopped last night (Sat) and I believe there's a love act on every Saturday. Decent prices too 😀”

“The pub, while a little run down is a fairly charming old school country pub with decent food and, mainly friendly staff. However, we've been looking forward to camping here for a while, apparently being a small site opposite the pub and adjacent to the river Trent. Firstly, it's not quite on the Trent. The river is only a couple of minutes walk away but not visible from the site. Now a fact important to know about this place which is completely out of the control of the owners. The smell. My god, the smell. A gut-churning, fetid stench that pervades your van/tent/clothes/brain without relent. Now it was very hot and the wind was clearly in the wrong direction but this is an apparently well-documented and often complained about issue in the area caused by JG Pears, a nearby animal by-product plant. And that's exactly what the place smells like - a mountain of rotting animal corpses. There's no escape from it. For that reason alone, we will probably never consider returning. Now for the positives. The pub staff were very friendly and helpful and we were served with a pleasant, if not slightly ordinary pub lunch and the beer was very good and reasonably priced. Who we believe to be the landlord was extremely helpful on our arrival, as was one of the bar staff. However, unfortunately the same can't be said of who we believe to be the landlady. On returning to the bar to ask the helpful girl a question, I was met from behind with a stern 'I THINK YOU NEED TO BE SPEAKING TO ME!' Ok, fine. Thanks, headmistress. A simple enquiry into the pitch options was answered with all the reasons why we have to accept being put in the middle, under trees, next to the entrance, rather than the quiet spot we'd been hoping for. The main reason apparently being that we'd only booked for one night. How very rude of us. It wasn't this so much, but the attitude of the woman. She spoke to me like I'd turned up to boil her cats. Hardly a warm welcome. And certainly no sign of flexibility albeit being fully booked, which we gracefully accepted. Must just mention the loos/showers: Serviceable and reasonably clean (until they'd been used for a day by the less respectful camping contingent) but in dire need of renovation. The icing on the cake though, after the tear-inducing stench and less than friendly disposition of our hostess was the lack of anything approaching peace or quiet. Constant screaming of kids and unoiled park swings, footballs being kicked relentlessly into our pitch, drunken youths, raucous parents and probably worst of all, the tuneless bellowings for several hours - until well after 10pm - of the local 'entertainment'. A man so devoid of musical talent that we're sure even his mother would advise against public performance relentlessly assaulted our ears in a club-singer-come-one-man-band-drum-thumping style at maximum volume to the point of us almost considering packing up. If it weren't for what we'd already drunk in an attempt to numb our senses from the surroundings, that's what we'd have done. After club singer man had managed to destroy most of pop culture's most enduring pieces and the adoring crowd had drunk themselves unconscious, we too managed a half decent night's sleep surprisingly, by means of sealing any vents and breathing through dampened fabrics. In all, a great shame because we'd been looking forward to trying the site for months - always being fully booked for some reason on previous attempts. Presumably by the fetor and din accepting demographic that seem to frequent the place. The site has great potential (aside from there being little chance of relocating either the corpse factory, or the myriad high tension pylons nearby) so it's a great shame. But a thank you to the majority of staff who were lovely. Best part for us? The exit. Sorry!”
