About Ye Olde Swan

Ye Olde Swan is a Tudor-era countryside pub on Newport Rd in Milton Keynes, in the Woughton-on-the-Green area beside lakes and parks, which makes it a stop for locals and walkers alike. It is a Greene King pub, and the kitchen serves a steak and ale pie, a venison dish and a Sunday roast with three meats: beef, pork and turkey. A local cask ale is poured in the bar. Staff take food and drink orders at the table rather than at the counter, and dinner bookings are taken. Dogs are welcome, so walkers can bring them along.

Customer Review Summary

Friendly, attentive service is what reviewers raise most, with several singling out one server who stayed professional while the pub was busy and checked on tables regularly. The food earns real praise too: the festive burger, a venison dish one diner called fantastic, steak and ale pie, steaks ordered medium rare, squid to start and a three meat Sunday roast with good portions. One reviewer calls it good solid pub grub rather than gourmet. The caveat is uneven cooking. A different diner found the venison submerged in thick pink sauce and very rare, the salmon fish cakes almost cold and the roast potatoes like reheated new potatoes, with only the steak and ale pie enjoyed. Another reviewer found a double burger completely overdone and a child's steak coated in cracked pepper that went uneaten, and thought it a little pricey for what arrived. One diner had to keep catching staff attention. Special requests went smoothly, including yoghurt in place of mayonnaise and extra gravy with a pie.

“We went here on a Saturday evening. The pub was fairly quiet which was a little surprising. The music playing was decent, the service was good as was was the food. No issues whatsoever and we'd happily eat here again. This isn't gourmet food just good solid pub grub. Most enjoyable!”

“Another great Sunday lunch with the family. The food was delicious and really good portions for everyone. The service was fast, friendly and efficient. Our waitress Olivia was friendly and attentive as usual. Looking forward to our next visit.”

“Very disappointed. We took some friends for lunch on 1st Ocober. Out of 4 meals only the steak and Ale pie was enjoyed. The venison (and all veg)was totally sumbmerged in a thick pink sauce and the meat was super rare. 2 salmon fish cakes were almost cold with hard eggs on top. Accompanying 'roast ' potatoes seemed like left over new potatoes just slighty heated but certainly not roasted. Service was however, friendly and efficient.”

“I had a lovely meal yesterday at Ye olde Swan. I chose the venison, I believe it is a new dish, it was fantastic! To top off my experience I was served by a lovely young lady called Olivia, very attentive, polite and most importantly down to earth. It is rare to get such an authentic interaction from a server. This is definitely an experience I will remember when I walk into a pub. I will definitely be returning again!”

“This pub is in a beautiful setting and has a certain charm despite its large size. Service was excellent. My request for yoghurt as an alternative to mayonnaise was catered for. The food let it down a little. The kid's menu has steak on it, which is good. They asked how I wanted it cooked, also good. It came with a generous coating of cracked pepper. This is something they should have also asked about. Children can be fussy and scraping the pepper off wasn't enough, my little one wouldn't eat it. I wasn't asked how I wanted my burger cooked. This is acceptable as microbiology dictates ground beef shouldn't be rare. The burger (a double) was completely overdone which ruined it somewhat. I would go back to this pub but I'd be a little more careful with what I ordered next time. All in all I felt it was a little pricey for what I got.”
