Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the chocolate brownie with ice cream, called rich and decadent by one diner and not too sweet by another. Close behind are the carvery and the roast sirloin with Yorkshire pudding, described as very well cooked, along with the pate starter, the pies, the fish and the white peach house soda. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and helpful, and one waitress is praised for taking allergies and dietary requirements seriously and for helping with the kids. The complaints are specific. One diner found the scallop, king prawn and crab linguine soggy with a watery sauce, and the rhubarb dessert in a trio fell short. Another says portions run on the smaller side, one was disappointed that the advertised set lunch menu was not offered, and a reviewer found the carpets, toilets and some chairs dated and worn. Several mention the canalside setting and garden, and one boating couple liked their Sunday lunch enough to come back on the way up the Grand Union.

“We were in the area for a family day and stumbled across The Black Horse. From the moment we arrived we felt very welcomed. The food was excellent and certainly took allergies and dietary requirements seriously. The highlight of our experience was certainly Kim, our waitress. Kim's attention to detail is a rare skill and refreshing to see a waiter/waitress taking her job seriously and so proud. Kim is certainly one of the greatest assets of the pub. The food is great too! Worth the trip!”

“Small track down the car park. The car park has cameras. This place is dog friendly. You can book online. You can sit in the bar, restaurant or outside. Toilets upstairs, although one disabled toilet available on the fround floor. Service was fast, and the food was delicious. I cannot complain, and would highly recommend. To note, its right next to the river, so you can even go for a walk afterwards !”

“Super quality service from the kitchen outward - perfect delivery and presentation. Delicious food. Median price but superb value. A great place to get a high end meal in q chilled out old pub. We enjoyed the salad, the pies, the fish”

“Came here for Sunday lunch on our way South on the Grand Union, we liked it so much we came again on the way back up. Kim who served us was an absolute delight, so helpful, especially with the kids and the food was excellent.”
