Customer Review Summary

Cocktails come up most often, described as inventive, tasty and well made, with one reviewer pointing to a liquor served with dessert. Among the food, scallops are praised in two reviews, the lamb rump is called tender, the beef cheek delicious, and the brown butter cake a standout dessert. Consistency is the recurring concern. One reviewer calls the food hit and miss, citing a trout that was too salty. Another received a 10oz sirloin with 5oz of pure fat, chips that seemed unsalted and a very sweet peppercorn sauce, and the waitress could not fix it. Small portions of the terrine and butternut Wellington left one diner making a second dinner at home. Guests on a hotel package found the burgers and chocolate brownie dry and the menu limited. Staff are often called friendly and attentive, yet others describe slow clearing between courses, a forgotten bill that was then wrong, and drinks charged despite the package. That guest was promised reimbursement and received only part of the money back.

“This is the midland restaurant and bar which is used in the morning for the hotel guests breakfast. We stayed for a night which included a three course evening meal. I booked this because we stayed a few weeks ago - but without the meal and enjoyed the hotel - so we were looking forward to it. Sadly the menu for such a plush hotel was very poor. Bangers and mash, burgers and fishcake was the choice of mains. The taste of the food was average. Burgers were stunning looking but dry. My starter of breaded mushrooms was nice but the chocolate brownie horribly dry. I noticed they had given us a different menu than other guests, probably because we bought the package. This in itself isn't a problem if the choice was a bit more interesting let's say. Plus the three course meal was £150 more than the bed and breakfast we had done a few weeks earlier. If you wanted a steak it was another £8.00 on top of the £150 already paid! The service was awful. Had to wait and wait for each course to be cleared and after yet another wait my wife had to go and ask where our desserts were. When we eventually got up to leave nobody seemed to know where they had put our coats and to top it all they insisted on us paying for our drinks despite the fact we were staying on a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis. Front of house staff were fantastic and said they would reimburse us for the meals. It hasn't gone in my bank yet but they did say it can take ten days. Just an update. We received £60.00 back which is under half of what we expected. Better than nothing I suppose.”

“I was surprised to see this restaurant on the Confidentials app, offering £25 vouchers for a £50 spend. I opted for the Confit Chicken and Morel Mushroom Terrine to start, followed by the Butternut Wellington for my main. I had no complaints about these dishes other than the portion size…miniscule! My friend ordered differently but found the same. When we got home, I pretty much made a second dinner. Perhaps we should have bought a voucher each, rather than sharing one. Drinks were expensive. Service was formal.”

“I had breakfast here, and it’s interesting to have such deluxe breakfast in the U.K. I love the egg bar, and the chef who cooked the omelette for me was wonderful and lovely. The overall vibe therein was marvellous.”

“Great place. Amazing steaks and grills. Food was beautifully presented from starters to desserts. Wasn't a fan of the starters except the scallops. The kids menu is really boring and wouldn't recommend even for the price. It's basically nuggets or fish fingers so we ordered the cod from the main menu for toddler, which we enjoyed. Would go again for grills and drinks. Drinks and cocktails were good as well.”
