About MNKY HSE Manchester

MNKY HSE Manchester is a Latin American restaurant and bar at 18 Lloyd St in Manchester, where dancers perform and a monkey comes out every hour. The dining room is dim and red-lit, with loud music, a DJ and live entertainment. The menu follows a small-plate sharing format and includes tacos in chicken, beef or wagyu, salt and pepper squid, and a half lobster served with a flaming presentation. A bar runs alongside the kitchen, with a list of experimental and classic cocktails. Bottomless brunch has drinks topped up at the table. Customer Review Summary

Bottomless brunch is what most celebrating diners return for, with drinks that keep flowing, a DJ and live entertainment, and servers who keep glasses topped up. Beyond brunch, reviewers name the tacos most often, along with salt and pepper squid, lemon chilli prawns, vegan sushi and a half lobster served with a flaming presentation. One reviewer found the Beef Wellington disappointing, with over salted potatoes and a middling gravy. Portions draw repeated complaints as small for the cost, and a couple of reviewers say the place suits drinks better than a full meal. Several find the room very dark and loud, one adds that the air con struggled, and another waited a long time for drinks on a Sunday. One reviewer notes a minimum spend on Saturday nights and says a waiter's offer of a round of baby Guinness shots was not free.

“We came to MNKY to celebrate two friends birthdays. We reserved a table and had a booth. The restaurant is very dark, dimly lit with red lighting, and also quite loud with the music due to the dancers and monkey who comes out every hour. When we sat down the waiter asked us to confirm who's birthday we were here for, he then said "how about a round of a shots" which some people interpreted as for free, but they weren't, so don't feel like you have to surcum to pressure because it was around £8.75 for a shot of baby Guinness. Overall the food was really tasty, we had a variety of options. Personally we had the chicken, beef and wagyu tacos, lemon chilli prawns, vegan sushi and tendersgem broccoli. I don't think anyone in our party had a complaint about any of the food. It is worth noting there is a £50 minimum spend per person on a Saturday night, so expect to spend some money when you go. For 8 of us our bill was just shy of £800. It is also recommended to have 3 plates so they know you need to spend the money. I do think this place is nice, I would come back but I am not eager to come back. I think it is quite hard to talk in the restaurant, and the dim lighting messes with your eyes after so long. The air con was also not on well enough for 20 degree heat and we were all sweating”

“Was really looking forward to this place, after seeing the videos and adverts. Hoping it was a casual dining experience, with some flair. The setting is a little strange for a restaurant; with decor somewhere between nightclub and stripclub, and a little too dark to eat in, but overall not offensive. We waited a surprisingly long time for drinks vs number of people in on this day (Sunday evening), and kind of felt a little ignored (possibly due to choosing the Summer BBQ menu rather than main menu) - everyone should get the same service irregardless - once the hostess had handed over to the wait staff. When the food arrived though it certainly made up for the so, so experience. Great portions, perfectly cooked meat (as requested medium rare) and good mix of flavours. Was a little surprised how small the fries were, given £10 price tag, but overall really enjoyed the presentation and taste of the food. I see what they were trying to do with the decor; sophisticated London member’s club, but the dim lighting and plastic plants let it down. This place should focus on the food and let it speak for itself, as the chefs are very talented, and very attentive and passionate; which was obvious from sitting close to the pass. Turn up the lights, make sure diners are attended to, and stop the pretence would be my feedback, but great food.”
