About Mughli Charcoal Pit

Mughli Charcoal Pit is an Indian restaurant in Rusholme, Manchester, at 30 Wilmslow Rd, with a charcoal pit set right in the dining area. Meat and vegetables are cooked over the charcoal there, so the grill is part of the room rather than hidden in a back kitchen. Lamb chops come off that grill, and so does the Malai Broccoli. Curries sit alongside the charcoal dishes, and the starters include samosas and onion bhajis. The drinks list pairs a Daru Lassi cocktail with a mango lassi.

Customer Review Summary

Lamb chops off the charcoal grill draw the most praise, with the Malai Broccoli close behind, and several reviewers also name the prawns and a mixed grill of tender, smoky meats. Starters such as samosas and onion bhajis are called crispy and full of flavour, and one diner singles out the lamb biryani, butter chicken and cookie dough. Not everyone agrees on the grill: one reviewer found the lamb chops dry and another thought the grilled meats were fine but not top tier. Service draws the sharpest complaints, including a long wait for drinks, a server pushing alcohol despite limited non-alcoholic options, plates put down roughly, loud music, and annoyance when a service charge was queried. One delivery customer received a vacuum packed butter chicken that tasted like a ready meal. Others mention the stairs to the toilets and a broken light at a table. One group ordered so many starters that they took their main course home, and found it just as tasty.

“As a store manager myself , I was really dissapointed with my visit to this restaurant. I was super excited for the lamb chops but they were super dry , food lacked flavour in general. Atmosphere was okay - our table had a broken light which affected our overall experience. Service was appalling , for the price point of the food , you’d expect the level of service to be top notch. I would reccomend you do check backs on customers, we had to wait over 10 minutes to order our drinks. This review isn’t to slate the establishment but constructive criticism. Better quality food for the price point and more attentive personalised service would take you a long way. I’d recommend manager to sit at every table and review server travel paths, guest experience and better service steps. Thanks.”

“I recently visited Mughli Charcoal Pit in Rusholme and had a fantastic meal. We ordered the mixed grill, samosas, and onion bhajis, and everything was packed with flavour. The mixed grill was the highlight, with a great selection of tender, smoky, and well-seasoned meats cooked perfectly over the charcoal. The samosas were crispy and delicious, while the onion bhajis were full of flavour and made for a great starter. The food was satisfying, full of authentic flavours, and exactly what you’d hope for from a restaurant in Rusholme. Overall, it was a really enjoyable meal and I’d definitely recommend Mughli Charcoal Pit if you’re looking for delicious Pakistani and Indian cuisine.”

“This was my first trip to the curry mile and I'm very glad i started off with Mughli. The food was very tasty and i will definitely be back. We made the mistake of ordering too many starters (which were all 10/10!) that we were full by the time the main course was due so had to take that home (and was just as tasty!). We got stuck into the food right away so didn't have time to take any pictures.”

“I don’t usually leave reviews, but this place managed to turn a birthday dinner into something worth warning others about. We came in on a quiet Tuesday evening, thinking it would be a relaxed experience. At first, service was acceptable—nothing special, but fine. That didn’t last long. Our server, Shama, seemed far more interested in pushing drinks than actually listening, despite us clearly saying we weren’t interested—especially given the very limited non-alcoholic options. Apparently, persistence is more important than customer preference here. Then came the moment that really set the tone. Out of nowhere, while we were still deciding, she asked about our background. The second we mentioned our parents are from Pakistan, her entire demeanour changed—instantly. Gone was the polite service, replaced with a cold, dismissive attitude that made it very clear we were no longer being treated the same. Call it what you want, but it didn’t feel like a coincidence. Drinks (still water and mango lassi) arrived practically thrown onto the table, along with glasses that didn’t exactly scream “clean.” When the food came—again, more dropped than served—it was clear that basic courtesy had left the building entirely. Which is almost impressive, because the food itself was genuinely excellent. 10/10. It takes real effort to serve food that good while making customers feel that unwelcome at the same time. The rest of the experience followed the same theme: music loud enough to make conversation a chore, no wet wipes or hand towels despite a menu built around finger foods, and being told to use a toilet that was unavailable—while a staff member nearby sat scrolling on his phone, contributing absolutely nothing except attitude. And then, the final touch of irony—a service charge added to the bill, as if any part of this experience justified it. Asking for it to be removed was clearly met with annoyance, which honestly said everything about how little customer experience seems to matter here. What stood out most wasn’t just the poor service—it was how noticeably it changed after that one question about our background. Whether deliberate or not, it left a bad taste that no amount of good food could fix. If you’re happy being treated like an inconvenience while eating great food, this is the place for you. If not, I’d strongly suggest going elsewhere. Safe to say, I won’t be returning—and I won’t be recommending it either.”
