About This & That
This & That is a family run Indian restaurant in Manchester, serving curries from 3 Soap St in the Northern Quarter since 1984. Service is canteen style. Customers choose their dishes at the counter, and the staff serve the curries onto a plate of rice. A plate holds three curries, for example two meats and one vegetable, with chicken tikka masala, lamb curry and daal among the dishes. The curry selection rotates, so the menu changes from one day to the next. Garlic naan can be added alongside the rice and curries, and mango lassi is available as a drink. The seating area is large and plainly furnished. A toppings station at the end offers chopped onions, cilantro and chilies.

Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers come for rice topped with three curries, served canteen style from a daily changing selection at a price they call ridiculously low. Named choices include chicken tikka masala, chicken curry, lamb karahi chops, daal, chicken chana, cabbage and mixed vegetables, with a keema that one diner likened to home cooking. Garlic naan is close behind, and samosas and a mango lassi also get a mention. Portions are described as generous and filling, and the food as hot and full of fragrant spices. One reviewer warns that it runs quite spicy, and a toppings station of chopped onions, cilantro and chilies lets diners adjust. The setting is plain and busy, and one reviewer found the curries decent but not outstanding, with the value as the draw. Staff are called kind and welcoming, and one server came by a table to ask whether the diner wanted a little more.

“Absolutely authentic, delicious Indian food. Can get a full meal meats and all for such a bargain! Loved the staff' hospitality. The little kick of nostalgia like I was sitting in one of my college campus canteens is a cherry on top. A true must visit!”

“We recently moved to Manchester and stumbled upon this hidden gem that’s been serving authentic Indian curries for over 40 years. Everything was priced under £10 and tasted comforting yet flavourful. The staff were super nice, and will be keep coming back to it. 5 stars.”

“Incredible experience from start to finish!! The food was so delicious and the portions were generous. The keema reminded me of my mom’s keema! I was definitely expecting to spend at least 20-30 GBP but only spent about 8 GBP for rice and 3 curries. The staff is the sweetest and even came by my table and said “do you want some more?” No other restaurant in the world would ever ask if you want a little more. Also the toppings station with chopped onions, cilantro, and chilies - OMG! This was such a classic touch. Any Bengali/Indian household will always have this at dinner parties, as well as asking if you want a little more, so all of these little things made me feel like I was at my auntie’s house, just having dinner. Super cozy and hospitable. 10/10, no notes.”

“A small Indian spot with a very authentic, original feel. There’s no need for a reservation—people simply walk in, order, eat, and leave. Nothing fancy, just simple and straightforward. You choose your own plate combination—for example, rice with two meats and one vegetable—by picking from the available options. I personally had rice with cabbage, chicken tikka masala, and chicken curry. We also tried the garlic naan and samosas, and everything was delicious. The food is absolutely amazing, but be warned—it’s quite spicy. The staff are genuinely kind and welcoming, always happy to help and explain the dishes. It’s also very affordable, especially if you’re looking for a filling meal. I would definitely recommend it, particularly if you enjoy spicy food.”
