About Monkey Trio Japanese Bar
Monkey Trio Japanese Bar is a Japanese sake bar and izakaya in Manchester, at 3 Valette Walk. A sushi chef prepares the sushi, and the kitchen makes its soy sauce and wasabi in-house, so the condiments served alongside the rolls come from the same kitchen. The Gold Dragon roll sits among the sushi, while the grilled pork belly set arrives over rice with salted spring onions, miso soup and side dishes. The drinks list centres on a large sake selection, with cocktails alongside. The space is small, with limited room and a few booths. The bar opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays.

Customer Review Summary
Sushi is the most frequent draw, with reviewers praising the Gold Dragon roll, sushi that tasted like Japan, and a sushi chef who was quick and friendly. Close behind is the grilled pork belly set, where the rice comes covered in slices topped with salted spring onions, alongside miso soup and generous sides. Reviewers also single out the large sake selection and homemade soy sauce and wasabi, and several call the fish very fresh. The recurring caveat is service. One diner says a cocktail order was never entered and a scallop dish never arrived, another says two drinks were unavailable and tap water never came, and a third notes many items carry sold out labels. One reviewer found the place slightly overpriced and received no birthday discount. Another says kitchen air lingers in the toilet and left a strong scent on their clothes. Another notes food and drinks are billed in two separate payments. Reviewers also mention limited space for booths, and one party was moved to a better seat.

“Great experience overall, food was very tasty, the vibes were alright, even the drinks were well put. However, I do believe that it was slightly over priced. Also they need to be more clear on Birthday discounts because we didn’t receive any.”

“Excellent Japanese restaurant. The food and drinks were both very good, the service was great, and the atmosphere was lovely. We really enjoyed our meal and will definitely come back.”

“Excellent food, freshly prepared, fast! Excellent prices. I've been here three times recently. Its very consistent. The sake range is very good! The sushi chef was friendly and very quick at preparing the sushi we had on the last visit. There are a few things that could be improved. 1. They have a weird quirk of separating food and drinks into seperate payments, therefore you have to pay your bill in two transactions. Not sure why, and while not a major inconvenience, a bit odd. 2. The service is generally lackluster, friendly, nice staff, but they struggle. 3. Many food items are not available with 'sold out' labels on.”

“Gold Dragon roll is such a winner! Cocktails looked gorgeous but we opted for sake (huge selection). limited space so best of luck to grab a booth!”

“Absolutely recommend this restaurant — I’ve already been here two days in a row and I’ll definitely be back again! I ordered the grilled pork belly set, and the rice was completely covered with generous slices of pork belly. The pork was grilled beautifully — super fragrant, full of flavour, and honestly proper tasty. What really stood out was the salted spring onions on top instead of the usual plain onions. They cut through the richness perfectly and added a much nicer depth of flavour. The set also comes with miso soup and side dishes, and the portions are seriously generous. Brilliant value for money overall. I’ll definitely be recommending this place to friends and anyone looking for a great meal!”
