About Fab Café Bar
Fab Café Bar is a bar at 109 Portland St in Manchester, decorated throughout with sci-fi and comics memorabilia and toys. A spaceship model hangs from the ceiling, a Doctor Who box sits in the corner, and Star Wars and Aliens items are on display. Arcade games and a foosball table fill out the floor, and an Amiga version of Pang is among the exhibits. The event calendar runs to bingo, quizzes and film screenings, including a Star Wars day and a Buffy Musical screening. Bingo players win chocolate, sweets or crisps for each line. The bar also has a dancefloor.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return for the sci-fi and geek memorabilia, from a big brown spaceship prop hanging over the main floor to a Doctor Who box in the corner and an Amiga version of Pang on display. Star Wars, Aliens and comics fans single out the toys and decorations, and the arcade games and foosball table get mentions too. Themed events come up repeatedly, including a Star Wars day with bingo prizes of chocolate, sweets and crisps, a quiz, and a Buffy Musical screening. Diners praise the cocktails and the range of beers as reasonably priced for central Manchester, along with a good playlist and friendly staff. One visitor liked the dancefloor atmosphere on a night out, and another found it quiet at 6pm on a Saturday. The one negative is a detailed complaint from a reviewer whose partner was barred for two weeks by the bar manager, then later told he was barred for life and asked to leave, after years of regular visits. That reviewer concluded that loyalty counts for nothing. One reviewer says they would return when it opens early.

“Love this place, great service and friendly staff and customers, drinks are reasonable for a central Manchester bar, love the alternative vibe that is still retained by this place. I attended for a Buffy Musical screening, loved it.”

“I used to go in here regularly with my partner before moving to Derbyshire. My partner remained in Manchester and continued to frequent Fab Cafe on a regular basis until, out of nowhere, the bar manager (with whom my partner was on fairly friendly terms) told him he was being barred for two weeks for 'staring at a female member of staff'. Incidentally, if there are only four people in the whole place, as there were at the time, chances are, people's eyes will meet more than once. My partner was so upset by this injustice that he actually didn't go back to the bar for a couple of years, until just recently when he decided he'd give it another try. Everything was fine for another couple of months, the only difference being that my partner no longer interacted with the manager. This week, said manager decided he'd previously barred my partner for life and he was asked to leave. Don't bother going here, your loyalty counts for nothing!”

“A fun bar hidden away down some steps. Loads of sci-fi memorabilia. Totally different to anywhere you might have been before!”

“Had so much fun here on Star Wars day! The bingo prizes were very generous - chocolate, sweets, crisps on offer for each line. And the cocktails I got were delicious and very reasonably priced especially for Manchester. The quiz was really fun and the atmosphere was friendly and chill. The bar manager / quiz host was really friendly and made us feel at home. I travelled in on the train to come here and so glad I did! Looking forward to coming back for another event!”

“Went as a group (3 of us in our 50s and two in their late 20s). Great playlist. Enough different beers to suit our needs. Generally very friendly, open and inclusive. Loved geeking out over the exhibits but my sister was left agonising about where she had seen the big brown spaceship model/prop before that was hanging from the ceiling over the main floor area (if a staff member could elucidate we'd be ever so grateful). We'd have stayed longer but had quite a long list of other bars to visit over our relatively short stay.”
