About The Pen And Pencil
The Pen And Pencil is a gastropub in Manchester's Northern Quarter, at 57 Hilton St on the corner with Tariff Street. The kitchen serves food all day, with a brunch menu that includes Eggs Pen & Pencil and a bottomless option where staff bring rounds of drinks to the table. Breakfast covers a full English and pancakes, and the burgers include one with peppercorn sauce. A limited small plates menu sits alongside, and the bar mixes cocktails and fruit smoothies. Resident DJs play on the venue's party nights, which gives the bar a music-led side after the food service. Private hire is available for networking meetings, parties and launch events. Waits for food can run long on busy days.

Customer Review Summary
Breakfast and brunch plates draw the most praise, with reviewers singling out the full English, the pancakes, the vegetarian breakfast and Eggs Pen & Pencil, while the burger with peppercorn sauce and the chicken parm get named by others. One reviewer calls the bottomless brunch a great birthday treat, with steady drink rounds and the kitchen leaving eggs off a plate on request. Fruit smoothies and a special cocktail also earn compliments. Staff are described as friendly, welcoming and efficient, and one team reopened the lunch menu for a late afternoon order. The recurring complaint is slow food on busy days, and one reviewer who waited a substantial time for a meal was given a generous discount. Smaller notes include bland pancakes at the bottomless brunch, burnt sausages on a burrito, a mixed-up order that was forgiven, and a menu one reviewer calls limited. Two diners mention the half price burger offer, and one couple returned the following day for a second breakfast.

“It’s quite a limited menu, but the food that they serve is good. We tried a few different of the small plates and we couldn’t fault any dishes. The service was excellent and Alex was a brilliant server.”

“I can’t remember much about my visit as I was pretty drunk when I came to eat, however I do remember the food being really tasty and a good quality for the price. I remember really loving the peppercorn sauce on the burger and the chicken parm as a whole is beautiful.”

“Burgers were delicious. Good size. And the half price offer is a gift. The service by Laura was just perfect, polite professional and bubbly, a real asset to the establishment!”

“We popped in for Breakfast on Easter Sunday as it was close to our hotel. It was very quiet which did worry us a bit but the venue is very nice and the staff were welcoming and friendly. Food was really nice. I had the vegetarian breakfast and it was delicious. There was one mix up with one of our orders but the waiter was so lovely and sweet we let it slide. coffee is very strong btw.”
