About The Peer Hat

The Peer Hat is a bar in Manchester at 14-16 Faraday St, with a live music venue in its basement. Gigs run on a stage down a flight of stairs, in an underground, dimly lit space. Original artwork and scrawl cover the walls, both inside and outside. The bar serves a selection of beers on tap, with Guinness among them. Events and social nights are held here as well, giving the room a purpose beyond gig nights.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the friendly bar staff, described as lovely and welcoming, with one group praising their chat through a busy Thursday social. The beer selection comes up repeatedly, with a nice range on tap and one mention of a great Guinness, and drinks are called reasonably priced. The atmosphere is scruffy and chilled, with original artwork and scrawled messages on the walls, and the basement stage earns credit for intimate gigs and good music. Some also say the smoking area is where they end up chatting with other patrons. On the downside, one reviewer calls the space cramped, and another found the stairs down to the live music stage awkward while carrying drinks with mobility issues. A separate reviewer reported poor service from a basement bartender who refused mixed drinks and became irate. The reviewer who struggled on the stairs adds that a member of staff was happy to help when asked.

“I was really looking forward to going here after moving to the NQ recently and a recommendation from a friend, scoping for a new local. Three of us arrived at 8 on a Friday and it was lovely and quiet, ordered a drink from the really friendly and welcoming team behind the bar (great selection of beers!) and settled in to admire the scruffy, playful atmosphere. As two queer men and a woman we were really excited to see amongst the scrawl on the walls there were messages about trans inclusion, women’s empowerment and the arts. The toilets were rough and have a wee bit of a mould/insect problem but that could be looked over because it felt like a proper community vibe. What really unsettled us though was when my girlfriend and I went for a vape out the front on the street. We just got outside and within seconds a tall security guard with a beard stormed out and started yelling at us that we could not smoke there, slamming his fists towards a (small and hard to notice) sign on the wall in the alcove which we were stood away from anyway because we’re polite vapers. He was incredibly aggressive, and rude, and we apologised immediately for not noticing the signs. We both (especially my female friend!) felt immediately intimidated, unwelcome and unsafe, and would have been so much better if he just said ‘sorry both were worried about crowds on the street do you mind vaping around the corner’). It was really jarring to have such aggressive and intimidating behaviour after such a fun, friendly, inclusive experience with the bar staff. I think, at 8pm on a quiet Friday, when we’d just settled in for a pint inside, it was totally unnecessary to be so condescending. It’s a shame because it was so different to the attitude/vibe of the lovely bar staff and the ‘feel’ of the bar. We’re both too scared to go there again, and I hope others don’t experience the same thing because it has everything else going for it and it’s sadly still too rare for queer people and women to feel comfortable in venues around the area. Hoping this can help provide a point of reflection because I really do want this place to succeed (even if we’re not coming back!)”

“Lovely live music venue and bar. Staff lovely and a great atmosphere. The only downside is how cramped it is but that's not The Peer Hats fault, if anything it represents how popular this place is! The live music stage is down a flight of stairs, I have mobility issues so navigating the stairs with drinks and trying to hold the banister/wall with people coming up and down both ways wasn't great but all I had to do was ask a member of staff to help me and they were more than happy to assist.”

“This place is not fancy. It's actually a bit scruffy. There is some broken furniture. It's maybe not too tidy. We absolutely loved this place for all these things. People described it to us as avant-garde/bohemian/hippieish. I guess you could say those things. But who cares ? It doesn't need a label. The vibe is chill. Patrons are sitting, chatting & making out. Lots of original artwork adorns both the inside & outside walls. They have a nice selection of taps. Drink prices are sensible. We met the owner. We met his girlfriend (who works behind the bar). They promote this idea of an attitude free zone. Come chill, order a drink, read a book, hang with your friends, dance, converse. Everything that a bar should be. But don't tell too many people about this place. I don't want it to change.”

“like the music, received horrible and unprofessional service from basement female bartender (brown hair and glasses). refused mixed drinks, kissing her boyfriend behind the bar, becoming irate. decent place but service lets it down.”

“The Peer Hat in Manchester is a fantastic spot that perfectly captures that authentic, underground basement feel. It is a brilliant venue for intimate live shows, offering a raw and atmospheric setting that really brings you close to the performance. The dimly lit, characterful space creates a unique vibe that you just don't get in more polished mainstream venues, making it a must-visit for anyone who appreciates the city’s alternative music scene.”
