About The Mardi Gras

The Mardi Gras is a pub in Manchester, set upstairs in the food court of The Orient at the Trafford Centre. The room follows a French Quarter New Orleans theme, with voodoo skull motifs and carnival-style decor that give a food court visit a distinct setting. The menu mixes Indian, Italian and English food, so one table can order chicken butter masala with garlic naan while another has fish and chips or a gourmet burger. Pizzas and vegetarian choices sit alongside them. Guests can order from the table through the Wetherspoon app instead of queuing at the bar. Breakfast is served, and tea and Lavazza coffee come with refills. The drinks list covers real ales, craft beers, gins and soft drinks.

Customer Review Summary

Food that reaches the table quickly is what reviewers raise most, with fish and chips called tasty and well cooked and a burger and lager arriving fast. Close behind, a few diners praise the Indian dishes, naming chicken butter masala, chicken jalfrezi and garlic naan, and one calls the Saturday breakfast great value. The dark atmosphere comes up more than once, and one reviewer says a fair pint is poured. Prices split opinion, with one reviewer finding them reasonable and another calling the pub pricey. The complaints are specific. One burger was dry and small, a Friday afternoon visit found only pizzas left, and a Sunday breakfast was ok but had no brown toast. Busy Saturdays made tables hard to find, and one group heard an area manager and staff shouting over their table to the office. Service otherwise earns praise, including one polite young server held up as an example to co-workers. One group playing bowling found it open when other places were closing, and the quick meal surprised them.

“A pricey ok spoons which had only pizzas left on a friday afternoon when visted. Area manager and staff shouting over our table to the office was grim.”

“Tucked away upstairs in the sprawling food court of The Orient, The Mardi Gras is one of the more unique branches in the JD Wetherspoon empire. Styled rather loosely around a "French Quarter" New Orleans theme—complete with faux-Bourbon Street exterior walls, voodoo skull motifs, and carnival-style decor—it tries its best to inject some Louisiana flair into Stretford. However, step inside and the illusion fades quickly; it is undeniably a classic, no-nonsense British Spoons through and through. The Good Stuff The biggest selling point here is convenience and predictability. If you have spent hours trekking around the Trafford Centre and just want to sit down without paying eye-watering restaurant prices, this place is a lifesaver. Using the Wetherspoon app from your table makes ordering incredibly efficient. On my visit, a pint of cold lager and a classic burger arrived in under ten minutes, which is impressive given how busy the kitchen stays. It is a fantastic spot for people-watching, and the ground-floor toilets are a massive bonus compared to the infamous, mile-long staircases found in most other Spoons across the UK. The Not-So-Good Stuff Of course, you get what you pay for. The food is standard microwaved and deep-fried fare—perfectly edible, but my burger was a bit dry and noticeably on the small side. It is also worth noting that because of its prime location inside a major shopping mall, prices are slightly marked up compared to your local high-street branch. The atmosphere can also feel a bit strange. It has an "airport lounge" energy, filled with exhausted shoppers, families handling overtired kids, and people just killing time. Because turnover is so fast, tables aren't always cleared immediately, so you might have to shift a few empty glasses or sticky plates aside when you first sit down. The Verdict The Mardi Gras won't win any culinary awards, and the service is purely functional rather than warm. But as a budget-friendly sanctuary to rest your feet, grab a cheap drink, and escape the shopping madness for an hour, it does exactly what it says on the tin.”

“Went last Friday lunch time and we were served by a polite and helpful young chap, we have been served by him before and he's the example his co-workers should follow.”

“It's a wetherspoons. It was exactly what it says on the tin. This particular location is surprisingly pleasant with a dark environment, kind staff and response wetherspoons locations go, the food was very nice and came out very hot too. Really good to see! They pour a fair pint too so you get what you pay for.”

“This stylish restaurant in the center of a gigantic shopping mall offered us the opportunity to take a break from the crowds and enjoy good food and beer. I recommend it.”
