About Star & Garter

Star & Garter is a bar at 18-20 Fairfield St in Manchester, a short walk from Piccadilly railway station. It runs two club nights that are among the city's longest-running, including a Smiths disco and alternative and indie nights held upstairs. The programme also covers DJ nights and live gigs by independent and lesser-known bands. The layout is split by floor: drinks are bought on the ground floor, and the dance floor is upstairs. The bar does not accept cash for drinks, so bring a card.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints are about the building and layout. One calls it a bit of a dump that could use a clean, another finds the stage awkwardly placed so people get in the way, and one notes technical difficulties and a locked cubicle in the men's. One is puzzled that cash is refused for drinks, and an older review recalls a cliquey crowd. Even so, one reviewer closes with "Long live independent music venues.

“Had some of the best nights of my life here over the last 35-40 years. From Crust, Skate and Ska/Ska-Punk to Metal, this place has them all. Atmosphere is fantastic and always a bouncing crowd.”
  • purpledeflector
“My review might be unfair as I've not been since 2010 or something. Back then this was one of the snottiest pubs in Manchester, in terms of its cliquey, pretentious clientele. The club nights and events could still be fun in spite of this, and the music was always pretty good, in the hands of a particular DJ who I think is often down in London now.”
  • Caroline Trott
“We went here for the temporary Stones & Silva transformation of the pub, in the weekend of their final match of their careers at Man City. What an amazing atmosphere! Made us want to go back when it's back to the Star and Garter. Real surprise little gem of a place.”
  • John Browne
“Went yesterday to celebrate my M8 Jeff's birthday and to enjoy the John Stones Bernardo Silva pop up bar it was great”
  • Adam Lancaster
“Visited many times for gigs and always had a great time, everyone is friendly and the sound for gigs is great!”
