The Garratt
Quick info
About The Garratt
The Garratt is a bar at 127 Princess St in Manchester city centre, serving both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. House doubles and cocktails make up part of the drinks list, and the bar runs deals on them. A doorman checks IDs at the entrance, and a no-tracksuits dress code applies, so visitors need to arrive in something other than sportswear. Entry is walk-in. The bar draws students, local residents, people from nearby businesses and tourists.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers center on the door and bar staff, with the bouncers drawing the most complaints. Several describe being kept in the rain or turned away as "too busy" while others were let in, and two reviewers call the treatment homophobic. One says a bouncer shouted at them and called them a stupid idiot despite their need for seating for a heart condition. Another describes a long Thursday night wait with no one admitted. Close behind is a bartender, described as rude by several reviewers, who removed patrons over a tracksuit rule. Two say the person was wearing joggers, not a tracksuit, while others in the beer garden were served in joggers. Some add that the rest of the staff are lovely and welcoming. Cheap drinks and a good atmosphere get praise, and one early Friday visitor found it not too crowded, with friendly staff on the way to the Apollo. A separate reviewer says a staff member knocked over a drink on a tray and refused a replacement.

“I went after a meal to celebrate my 25th. Cheap drinks , good atmosphere , but rude staff. I had this problem last time too, I had bought quite a few drinks and my friend bought lots of shots so we asked for a glass tray to carry them, a member of young staff clumsily knocked my drink over onto the tray carelessly when it was resting on the bar table waiting for others drinks to be made , so I just laughed and asked ( and expected) for a replacement to when he and a colleague who had tried to help his friend/ colleague in the situation told me I’d have to buy another , I didn’t want to kick off and cause problems but looking back I’m very annoyed at that , pair of careless idiots and I hope their customer service improves with age.”

“I arrived here on a Saturday around 7pm with a large group of friends. There was no queue, and the bouncer at the time was a guy with a couple of face piercings who was cool and relaxed and let us straight in. However, because there was a queue for the bathroom my boyfriend and I left to find somewhere else to use one. As we were leaving we noticed the bouncer had changed and he had clearly acknowledged us leaving. We were only gone for about 10 minutes but when we came back to The Garratt it had started raining and there was now a queue of around 10 people. The bouncer wasn’t checking IDs and was just making everyone stand in the rain. Since we had already been inside and were with a large group, I politely asked the bouncer if we could go back in and whether we had to wait in the rain considering we had only just left. He arrogantly replied, “Well, I didn’t see you leave.” I accepted that he wasn’t going to let us straight back in and got back into the queue. About 10 minutes later he started checking IDs. When it got to me and my boyfriend he let my boyfriend in but put his hand in my face and told me to wait there in the pouring rain. This was very odd especially as he had let other couples in together before us. I just found it very rude that he seemed to use his “security” role as some sort of power trip simply because I had politely asked a question. Reading the rest of the reviews though it does sound like he may have a superiority complex.”

“Irish lady with black hair behind the bar is incredibly rude for no reason and to add to this had my friend removed, looking her up and down in a condescending manner and saying ‘Tracksuits arent allowed’ while my friend was in joggers and a crop top. And after being corrected - ‘They’re joggers’ she replied with ‘Oh well joggers arent allowed then.’ However as this rule of Tracksuits is stated on a sign their strictness on the matter is not shown throughout given that there were multiple people in actual tracksuit bottoms. Adidas three stripes. Yet my friend was removed. That being said the rest of the staff are lovely and welcoming i.e Cam who served me always happy to be there. And when Kai is on shift hes always sound and never rude. There seems to be an overwhelming amount of complaints about the same member of staff and this needs addressing.”

“Been coming here for about 10 years and always loved it until my most recent visit. A woman with dark hair was so rude to me to the point I cried. Had me removed which was extremely embarrassing. Never have I been spoken to like that from hospitality staff in my whole life. Needs looking into as clearly I’m not the only one who’s had this experience judging by the reviews. Not usually one to write reviews like this but it’s really affected me.”

“Absolutely disgusting experience. The bouncer let the girls we were with in straight away, then suddenly decided the pub was “too busy” when it came to letting the rest of us in. The place very obviously was not full, and to make it even more blatant, once the girls came back out to check on us, they immediately started letting other people in afterwards. It was painfully obvious what was going on and it felt completely homophobic. Being treated differently at the door because of how you look or present yourself is vile, humiliating, and unacceptable in 2026. If your door staff are going to discriminate against people, at least don’t insult everyone’s intelligence with excuses that fall apart two minutes later. We left feeling genuinely upset and embarrassed. Avoid this place.”
