Customer Review Summary
Food is the most debated draw. Some praise the pub classics, generous portions and fresh plates, while others report a decline. Their complaints include cold steaks, a peppercorn sauce that tasted like onion gravy, chips burnt to a crisp, almost raw buttered greens and a steak and ale pie called only ok. Two longtime visitors say their last couple of meals fell well short of earlier ones, and one says the food repeated on them. Drinks draw steadier approval, with John Willie ales and a range of craft and continental beers singled out, though one reviewer calls the beer not very good and finds the prices high. Service is mostly described as warm, welcoming and excellent, and the large garden and spacious interior are liked. One diner was refused food as a walk-in, asked to move off tables said to be reserved and told to leave by 7pm. One reviewer found the disabled toilet cramped. After the raw greens complaint, a member of staff apologised.

“Absolutely shocking experience ...visited on Saturday ordered a guinness and a pint of birra Moretti.... the latter being off so asked for a replacement and sat down to enjoy the drinks and peruse the menu at a table in the bar.....upon which we were told that the table had been booked and the people had arrived and that we were asked to move ( no such notices had been placed on the table in the public bar ) we then politely moved to another table in the public bar and then i went to the bar and asked if we could order some food upon which I was told that i could not order any food as they were not taking any walk ins ( this being 6.20pm ).... upon my return to my table my partner visited the rest room where several other customers were also voicing the same concerns about the shocking behaviour about the service they had recieved... upon her return and both with half a pint each to drink we were then informed that the table we were sitting on was reserved (again no such signs on a table in the public bar) and we would have to leave at 7pm ... on the way out of the bar a couple who had entered after us and sat at the bar began to order food with out any difficulty.....after this shocking treatment I will never visit this pub again....”

“Very nice space (inside and out), lovely staff, but the food has been awful the last few times I visited. Today, I had the steak and ale pie with a side of buttered greens. The pie was ok, but the chips were just the end bits that you find at the bottom of the bag and they were just burnt to a crisp. No actual chips on my plate. The buttered greens were inedible - almost raw and not chewable. I could not eat them. I mentioned this to a member of staff and she was apologetic. Great for a drink, I would not eat there again.”

“Not bad food, but it kept repeating on me though. Service is good but beer is not very good. Quite expensive too so I won't recommend it if you just popped in for a quick bite.”

“The Red Lion is a modern take on a traditional pub. We offer a cosy atmosphere and a warm welcome in a historic venue. We’re the perfect pub in Withington to catch up with friends over a couple of pints of cask ale in our beer garden or for a bite to eat with the family. Our new menus offer delicious dishes, perfect for the season and our bar is stocked with fantastic cask ales, lagers, gins and wines. Sunday is a day of roast – we offer a fantastic Sunday pub lunch with bottomless gravy and Yorkshire puddings with our roasts – please book early as this is a popular occasion. We’re a dog friendly pub in Withington, feel free to bring your four-legged friends. If you’re struggling to find us we’re situated close to the Christie and Maggie”
