About Lass O'Gowrie Manchester

Lass O'Gowrie is a pub in Manchester's Northern Quarter on Charles St, with a beer garden built over the River Medlock so drinks can be taken out above the water. Football and other live sport play on screens through Sky and TNT Sports, and pool and darts are there for anyone who would rather join in. At the bar, Guinness is on tap alongside a range of other beers, and the cocktail list includes a Bakewell cocktail. The food menu covers pub classics and sharing platters, with a Steak and Ale pie served with buttered mashed potatoes and mushy peas. The pub is open daily, and a live band plays on some evenings.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the Guinness and the friendly bar staff, with several describing a pint and a relaxed, busy room. The Bakewell cocktail gets praise from one drinker, and another enjoyed the trio of chips and sharing platters, while a third names the steak and ale pie with buttered mashed potatoes and mushy peas. The beer garden over the river, the dog-friendly welcome and watching the football come up as draws, and one reviewer mentions a student discount. Complaints are mixed. One reviewer says the Guinness was poor, another found the new hard-backed furniture uncomfortable and the gents toilets grim, and one had to take orders themselves and called the service absurd. Two others found it pricey, with a medium glass of wine close to a tenner. Even so, a group organiser describes an assistant manager going above and beyond for thirty-plus friends.

“Great pour of Guinness. Very attentive staff behind bar and on floor. Rosie, the epitome for all assistant managers to strive for, went above and beyond in supporting me and my thirty+ friends. Atmosphere was charming, service swift, cannot recommend more than I am now. Run don’t walk.”
  • Mark Blundell
“Stopped here for a quick pint to meet some friends during graduation week. Impressed with the student discount and the overall ambience was friendly and comfortable. Bar staff were really friendly and welcoming. Even recreated the Bakewell cocktail which was delicious. A must try! Lots of options on tap. Didn’t eat so couldn’t comment on food. Small outdoor space with lots of shade. Would recommend to anyone looking for a decent pint or cocktail in a relaxed setting.”

“Lovely pub but quite overpriced for a GK pub, almost £10 for a medium glass of wine is not great! Service fine for a busy saturday.”
  • Selena Mobbs
“Steak and Ale pie, buttered mashed potatoes, mushy peas - all top notch. Friendly service on a weekday afternoon.”

“It's a late Victorian/Edwardian pub built on the site of a pisstiere - a piece of land set aside for men to relieve themselves into the river Medlock. A hanging beer garden has been constructed over said river, which has for a long time been imprisoned in a narrow culvert between works and warehouses. It's a welcomingly human scale place in an area characterised by alienating architecture of high rise blocks and multilane highways in the heart of student land and adjoining the gay village. The beer and food are both excellent and cater for most tastes and dietary requirements. A reasonable range of soft drinks is also available. Cash and most kinds of electronic payment are accepted. There is no dedicated parking as this is the city centre. The atmosphere is warm and friendly and the clientel on a Saturday afternoon were reassuringly middle aged. There is no banging music. Sitting in the beer garden looking down along the river, one is vividly aware of being in the birthplace of the industrial revolution and reminded of the foolishness of allowing the private ownership of the means of production.”
